How Net Metering Works
Solar system owners – at least here in SoCal – operate under utility rules known as Net Energy Metering, or just Net Metering for short. Here is how this works: on the day when your solar power system is given Permission to Operate by the utility, your billing will shift to Net Metering . Every day, as your system operates, you will either be exporting energy back onto the grid, or importing energy from the grid.
Think of it this way: you get up at 6 a.m. and its dark outside. You turn on some lights, the radio, coffee maker, etc. Your solar system isnt producing anything so you are purchasing energy from the grid. You go off to work as the sun comes up, and your system turns on. All day long, your solar system is producing energy, but there is no one there to use itthe A/C is off, the TV is off, the house is darkso all of that excess energy is sold back to the utility. Your fancy new meter keeps track of all of that energy coming and going.
Heres the thing, depending on how much of a net energy purchaser you were, that bill could be pretty significant, in some cases well over a thousand dollars or more!

Understanding Your Electric Bill After Installing Solar
The main difference with your electric bill after you install solar panels will be three new sections: kWh Use By Meter, kWh Received , and the Net Metering Summary. These new sections will show you what you’re using at your property versus what you’re pulling from the grid.
When looking at these sections, its important to remember how solar energy works. The energy generated from your solar system will be used at your property first, and then any extra production above what you use will pass through your meter back to the grid, making your meter spin backward. This is important to remember for two reasons: 1. the production on your PV monitoring system will be different than the production listed on your electric bill, and 2. the usage charts on your electric bill will only show the energy that passes through your electric meter. This is a common point of confusion for new solar system owners.
The kWh Use By Meter – kWh Delivered
This section will show how many kilowatt-hours youve pulled from the grid . In this example, our customer used 770 kWh from the grid during this billing cycle.
This section shows the total number of kWh that was passed back to the grid . In states that allow Net Metering, a one-to-one kWh exchange will take place. The customer in this example had an overproduction amount of 704 kWh that was sent back to the grid during this billing period.

Account Number: the number assigned to your payment profile in our billing database. All of your billing and contact information is attached to this number, so its easy for us to reference. A quick word about the account number on your billif you’ve already signed up for Vivint Solar Account Center and the Vivint Solar App for Apple or Android, you may recall that we directed you to register using a seven-digit number. In both Account Center and the Vivint Solar App, we refer to this number as an “account number,” but another way to describe it is “service number.” These are two different numbers that identify two different things. Invoice Number: a sequential number assigned to your bill for organizational purposes.
