Connect Solar Panels In Series

How Do You Connect Solar Panels To Batteries

How To Connect Solar Panels in Series & Parallel

Connect the positive wire from the solar panel to a battery cable with a fusible link between the battery and the solar panel. This will help prevent a fire or battery explosion in the event of a short in the wiring. Connect the negative wire of the solar panel to the negative terminal of the battery.

How Parallel Connections Affect Volts & Amps

In a parallel connection, the amps generated by each panel get added together. But the voltage stays the same.

Therefore, if you have three solar panels that can each output a maximum 18.8V and 5.86A, then the solar array has a potential to generate only 18 volts but 17.58 amps of current.

The fancy math: 5.86 amps x 3 panels = 17.58 amps

Solar Panels In Series Vs Parallel

Solar panels can be connected in two different ways: series or parallel. When they are hooked up in series, each solar panel is placed end to end with the other, and the electrical current flows from one panel to the next. In a parallel connection, each solar panel is placed side by side with another, and the electrical current flows from one panel into the next.

The main difference between these two methods is that series connection increases voltage while parallel connection increases amperage. In a nutshell, this means that if you want more power output , youll likely want to connect your solar panels in series. If you need more current , on the other hand, connecting them in parallel would be the better option.

How to Wire Solar Panels in Series

You have two different higher voltage solar panels, i.e., one 100W/24V and one 200W/24V that you want to connect to the already working 12 V solar power system comprising the two 12V 50 W solar panels connected in parallel from the previous scenario.

In this case, you have to use a step-down MPPT charge controller capable of stepping the 24 V solar panel voltage down to 12V.

Why MPPT charge controllers?

Why not using the low-cost PW controller you might ask?

Because the MPPT charge controllers convert the voltage difference between 24V solar panel and 12V battery bank to an increase in its output current that is twice higher compared to using a PWM charge controller.

With this twice higher current, the power provided at the output of the MPPT controller would be almost two times higher compared to the usage of a step-down PWM controller.

Please, have in mind that this a simplified diagram. Hence, the equipment needed for combining these solar panels and fuses need are omitted.

How Can I Increase My Solar Panel Output

There are a few ways that you can increase the amount of power your solar panels produce. One important consideration is to install more panels, which will obviously increase your output. Another is to make sure that your pv panels are in direct sunlight as much as possible if theyre shaded by trees or another structure or simply just partial shading, the performance of your system output will be reduced.

You can also improve their efficiency by cleaning them regularly and keeping any debris or dirt away from their surfaces. Finally, if you have an adjustable panel system, you can adjust it to face south or north for maximum sun exposure.

Does Connecting Solar Panels In Series Increase Wattage

When connecting solar panels in series, the wattage of the solar array is increased. This is because the voltage of each panel is added together to create a larger total voltage. While this does increase the wattage, it also increases the current. For this reason, it is important to make sure that the panels are compatible with one another and can handle the larger current.

How Are Watts Calculated

How to Wire Solar Panels in Series Parallel

Lets go back to our water analogy. Instead of just filling the sink, we will put the water to work by spinning a turbine or wheel.

In the first example, we will attach a thin pipe to the tap. By reducing the diameter, the water travels through we reduce the amount that flows through the system simultaneously, we increase the pressure of the water , and the wheel turns.

Now lets take the pipe off the tap and use the water, with no adjustment, as it flows out of the tap. Although the pressure is now less , the speed of the water is increased. The result is that the wheel still turns.

If we compare the tap and the pipe, even though the volume and pressures are different, they both deliver power, which in electricity is called Watts. We can control the power the system produces by controlling the voltage and amps.

If you multiply the voltage and the amps, you can calculate the power .

How Is Electricity Measured

The three primary measurements of electricity that are relevant to a solar system are voltage, amps, and watts. Before we continue, lets quickly refresh what these are.

When you get your energy bill, it shows the power you used listed as kilowatt-hours. But at the store, youll see things like 12-watt light bulbs, 9-volt batteries, and vacuum cleaners with 15-amps of sucking power. Why are there so many measures of electricity?

Several things must happen in an electrical circuit for electricity to flow and work to be done. The most straightforward analogy is to think of an electrical circuit as the tap on your kitchen sink. To make the tap work, you need three things to happen:

  • You need to turn the tap on switch
  • You need water to be available in the pipe
  • You need sufficient pressure to make the water flow
  • How does this apply to how solar panels are connected and our electrical terms?

What Is A Solar Panel Combiner Box

When installing a solar panel system, one of the most important components is the solar panel combiner box. What is it, and what does it do? A solar panel combiner box is simply a junction box that connects multiple solar panels together forming a solar power system.

It allows you to connect your panels in series or parallel, depending on your needs and the specifications of your system. The combiner box also provides a place to connect your charge controller and/or inverter, and includes fuses or circuit breakers to protect your system from overloads.

Should You Wire Solar Panels In Series Or Parallel

This might sound vague and repetitive at this point. Still, you have to understand that the decision to wire your solar panels either in series or parallel highly depends on the conditions you need to satisfy.

Conditions to satisfy? What are those?

Recall that connecting solar panels in series increases the total system voltage sent to your inverter. On the other hand, parallel-connected solar panels increase the whole system current received by the same power inverter.

So when choosing a wiring configuration, your job is to make sure that the total system voltage, total power injected, and total system current fall within the inverters voltage, power, and current ratings, respectively.

The best way to drill this concept into you is through practice. So, in the next section, we will use all the things we discussed to decide which wiring configuration/s to use for a 1kW and a 5kW solar system.

Why Do People Prefer Parallel Over Series Solar Panel Wiring

    Series, Parallel & Series

We are aware by now that a series of solar panels depends on each other to generate electricity. With one panel breaking down, it will affect the entire chain of wires in the circuit. It will adversely impact the flow of electricity through other panels.

If you have higher power requirements and need electricity 24*7 without interruption, then parallels are ideal. It is possible since if one panel is damaged, it will not affect the performance of the other panels.

So, by combining both, your panel will function more effectively and provide better results for your households power requirements.

The Advantages Of Solar Panels Connected In Series

The voltage produced by panels connected in series is aggregated.

Using an MPPT controller means that the highest voltage possible is reduced. At the same time, the amperes are adjusted to maximize the power over the whole system.

Using a lithium battery attached to three panels , the total output would be 51volts. As the system only needs 14.4-volts, the MPPT system will only need to operate at 28% capacity in a low light situation to produce 14.4-volts.

What Happens When You Connect Solar Panels In Parallel

When connecting solar panels together in parallel, the total voltage output remains the same as it would for a single panel, but the output current becomes the sum of the amperage of each panel. Figure 1 shows a schematic of a solar panel with two parallel solar cells.

In this case, each cell is connected to a common ground, and the two cells are connected in series. The voltage and current are shown in volts and amperes, respectively. Figure 1 also shows the circuit diagram for the solar cell with three parallel cells, as in Figure 2.

However, in this example, it is not necessary to have a separate ground for each individual cell. Instead, all three cells can be connected together to form one large ground plane, which can then be used to ground all the other cells in a parallel configuration.

Renogy: How to connect your Solar Panels in Series and Parallel Pt. 2

Wiring solar panels in parallel means connecting the positive terminal of one panel to the positive terminal of another, and then the negative terminals together as well. These connections are made in a combiner box, and the results of this connection are often called a PV output circuit.

Opposite to a series connection, a parallel connection increases the systems amperage while the voltage remains the same. For this reason, parallel wiring is an excellent choice for someone wanting a large number of panels to produce a lot of energy while still keeping the voltage low not to exceed the limits of their chosen inverter.

A parallel connection will safeguard the system from underperforming if a single panel in the string receives less sunlight than the rest due to shading or other factors such as a loose wire or bad connection.

Think of your array the same way you think of Christmas lights. If your lights are wired in series, one bad bulb or connection will cause every other bulb after it to cease to work as well. This wont happen in a parallel connection, which is why this type of connection is often more recommended than the other.

    Voltage And Amps In Parallel

To wire solar panels in parallel, connect all of the positive terminals on each panel together and then do the same for the negative terminals. The resulting current will be the sum of all of the panel amperages in the parallel array. However, the total voltage will be equal to the output voltage of a single panel.

For example, in the graphic above, we have three 18-volt, 6-amp panels wired in parallel. The output current is 18 amps , yet the output voltage is still 18 volts.

Connecting solar panels to MPPT Charge Controller â Caravan Solar Panel ...

In a series connection, the NEGATIVE output cable of the first panel is connected to the POSITIVE output cable of the second panel. Then the NEGATIVE output cable of the second panel is connected to the POSITIVE cable of the third panel. And so on, for however many solar panels you have.

Finally, the POSITIVE cable of the first panel and the NEGATIVE cable of the last panel are connected to the solar charge controller.

    * Solar fuses are technically required in this wiring example, but are excluded here for simplicity.

In a parallel connection, the POSITIVE output cables from all the solar panels get joined together using a branch connector. The same is done for all the NEGATIVE output cables.

The branch connectors take all the positive and negative cables and output a single POSITIVE and NEGATIVE line, which then gets connected to the solar charge controller.

For simplicity sake, the above diagram does not include solar fuses. We talk more about that below.

Ensure Strings Have Similar Conditions Or Connect Strings With Different Conditions To Different Mppt Ports

Once youve determined that your strings are acceptable lengths for the inverter specifications, another key consideration is that the strings have the same conditions if they are connected to the same inverter MPPT.

Mismatches in the conditions on the strings will reduce the efficiency and power output of your solar design. For a discussion of why mismatches in shading, orientation, or azimuth result in lost power output see the fourth article in our PV system losses series: Tilt & Orientation, Incident Angle Modifier, Environmental Conditions, and Inverter Losses & Clipping.

If you are designing for a site where its necessary to have panels on different roof faces, or some areas of the array will get more shade than others, you can ensure that the panels with different conditions are separated into their own strings, and then connect those strings to different MPPTs of the inverter .

This will allow the inverter to ensure each string operates at the point where it produces the maximum power.
