In just the last decade, silvers use as a germ killer has expanded dramatically and not only in medicine. Beginning around 2005, companies started adding a special form of silver to a wide range of everyday products. This silver was fashioned into amazingly tiny particles. Companies put it into socks, toothbrushes, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and other items.
Sometimes adding the special silver is promoted as a defense against bacteria that might make people sick. Other times, its more about neutralizing bacteria that cause stinky feet or smelly breath. At last count, more than 400 consumer products contained this form of silver, called nanosilver.
People have used silver products for thousands of years. But some scientists have begun to worry that adding so much nanosilver to so many things could harm our health or the environment. Experts have begun looking for answers. But so far, the findings are mixed.
The Vicious Treatment Cycle
Many people suffer with sinus infections until they begin feeling pain and see a frequent thick, yellow or greenish nasal discharge. At this point, they turn to sinus medication, triggering the onset of the vicious treatment cycle. Most over-the-counter and even prescribed medications provide only temporary relief and actually end up drying the sinuses and nasal passages. This drying effect prevents the draining of mucous, which leads to further buildup in the sinuses, more pain and more congestion.

Colloidal Silver Is Not Safe To Consume
While the antimicrobial properties of silver are well-studied, the suggested benefits of colloidal silver as a dietary supplement have not been scientifically proven.

In fact, the FDA recently issued warnings against seven companies that claimed to sell products that cured or prevented the coronavirus, including colloidal silver.
Wong says that companies selling products with colloidal silver that claim to prevent or cure illnesses like coronavirus are a major threat to public health, as they might stop or delay consumers from seeking the appropriate medical treatment.
Overall, the FDA and Mayo Clinic, to name just two, point out the lack of scientific evidence for the oral use of colloidal silver. It’s important to note that silver has no nutritional function in the body, and is not an essential part of the human diet.
What Are Some Things I Need To Know Or Do While I Take Silver
- Tell all of your health care providers that you take silver. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
- Do not use longer than you have been told by the doctor.
- Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin.
- Some products may have metal. These products need to be taken off before an MRI, cardioversion, radiation, or other procedure. Talk with the doctor about silver before any procedures.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks to you and the baby.

In rare cases, excess doses of colloidal silver may lead to irreversible and grave health problems which include damage to kidneys and neurological issues like seizures. Silver products can also interact adversely with some medications like penicillamine, quinolone antibiotics, thyroxine, and tetracycline.
