How Much Is A Solar Backup Battery

Is My Solar System Battery Ready

My Solar/Battery Backup Power System: System Overview and Costs

The Sungrow Hybrid inverter installed without a battery connected.

Most existing solar systems can have energy storage added using an additional inverter or one of the many AC coupled batteries now available. Some companies may advertise a battery ready system, these systems are just like a common grid-connected solar system but use a hybrid inverter rather than a common solar inverter. Hybrid inverters have battery connections and controls built-in, which makes adding a battery much easier in the future. The downside is battery ready or hybrid inverters are typically 20-30% more expensive than a standard solar inverter. An additional problem is due to the rapid evolution in battery technology, if you install a hybrid inverter and want a battery several years later, a compatible battery may be difficult to find.

Is Solar Battery Storage Good Value For Money

One of the most common questions we are getting at the moment is: is solar storage worth the money?

Our answer is to throw a question back at you: how much would you be prepared to spend to save, say, $1000 per year? Your answer to this determines when you are ready to buy Energy Storage

Lets say you install 5kWh of Energy Storage with an estimated lifetime of 10 years .

Let us also assume you will use all of that 5kWh each and every day.

Lastly, lets assume you are paying 30c per kWh for your power today.

Therefore, your 5kWh of storage would be expected to save $1.50 per day or $547.50 per year. The batteries themselves should last well in excess of 10 years although the capacity will slowly diminish over time.

If you were happy to accept that you would get your money back in say 7 years, you would, therefore, expect to pay around $3800 for that 5kW of storage. If you needed to get your money back in 5 years, it would be around $2700, and $5,500 for 10 years, and so on.

The cost of batteries starts at around $5,000 for smaller units such as Enphase and larger batteries such as the sonnenBatterie start at around $13,000 for an 8 kWh battery that can be cycled up to 3 times a day. Because battery systems need to be accurately sized up to match your requirements we encourage you to make an enquiry. Retrofitting A Solar Battery To An Existing Solar Pv System

If you already own solar panels at home, thats not a problem you can easily retrofit a solar battery to an existing solar PV system.

When the solar battery is installed, it must be either AC-coupled or DC-coupled, and this depends on the type of inverter that your solar panels are using.

If your PV system has a microinverter, then the solar battery will have to be AC-coupled. This is the cheaper of the two options , and the installation process is fairly quick.

However, this solution does lead to additional energy loss over time, because it involves converting the solar-generated electricity twice.

On the other hand, if you dont have a microinverter, then youll need to replace your existing inverter with one that can work with your solar battery.

This is more expensive up front , but it only involves converting the solar-generated electricity once, so there is less energy loss in the long term.

To find out how much it will cost you to retrofit a solar battery to your solar PV system, simply fill in this quick form, and our professional installers will be in touch.

They can help you work out exactly what size battery you need and whether it needs to be AC-coupled or DC-coupled.

Most Intelligent: Enphase Encharge

Enphase

A leader in solar manufacturing, specifically microinverters, Enphase Energy unveiled its solar battery backup system, the Enphase Encharge, in 2019. The Encharge 10 acts as an all-in-one smart energy hub for your entire home energy system, not just your solar panels. A modular battery system, the Encharge is available in increments of 3.5 kW, with the Encharge 10 being the most common option.

What We Like:

  • The Encharge system features the Enpower smart switch, which automatically toggles between solar, grid, battery or generator power depending on the needs of the home.
  • Enabling the direct integration of generators for additional off-grid power makes the Encharge one of the most versatile batteries available on the market.
  • If youre using your battery as backup power for an outage, the Enphase is one of few batteries that can automatically detect a grid outage and switch your home into off-grid mode. For context, the Tesla Powerwall requires a manual switch.

What We Dont Like:

  • The Encharge 10 typically costs around the same amount as a Tesla Powerwall, but with less capacity and a lower power rating.

Q: What Determines How Many Solar Panels I Can Put In A String

Solar Battery Backup Power for Homes in ME, NH, MA ...

A: When solar panels are connected in series with the positive of one panel connected to the negative of the next, their Voltage is added together but their Amperage does not increase, so the Amperage of the string is the same as the Amperage of a single panel. The Voltage resulting from connecting panels in series is called the string Voltage. Your inverter or charge controllers spec sheet should show an input Voltage range. Exceeding the maximum Voltage in this range can cause error codes and/or damage the inverter or charge controller.

Which Battery Backup System Is Right For You

You’ll need to determine the wattage and voltage consumption of your entire household. Thankfully, Lowe’s has a handy worksheet to help you figure out your power needs. Once you know know how many watts and volts your appliances use, you’ll want to add at least 20 percent to the total that way, if you add electronics or appliances, or something starts to draw more power than usual, your system will be able to keep up.

And if retail and installation pricing seems a bit steep, many places offer some sort of payment plan so you can break the final cost into more affordable, monthly payments.

Q: What Is A Kilowatt Of Solar Panels

A: A Kilowatt of solar panels is 1000 Watts of panels based on the laboratory rating, which is how panels are quoted in the solar industry. For example, two 500 Watt solar panels, four 250 Watt solar panels and ten 100 Watt solar panels are each a Kilowatt of solar panels. Do not confuse a Kilowatt of solar panels with a Kilowatt-Hour of electric use.

Q: Can I Attach An Off

A: No. The off-grid inverters output does not synchronize with the grids output, so grid output and the output from an off-grid inverter cannot enter the same breaker panel at the same time. The off-grid inverters output must be connected to a breaker panel that is not powered by the grid. However, an off-grid inverter can be powered by the grid when solar production is low and battery Voltage drops below a pre-determined level.

Are Solar Batteries Worth The Extra Cost

Although pairing solar panels with energy storage is becoming more common, it doesnt mean its the right choice for everyone.

Installing a solar battery storage solution provides the greatest benefits to homeowners who live in areas that experience frequent power outages, where full-retail net metering isnt offered, or if there are battery incentives available in their area.

Solar batteries are also great if your main reasons for going solar are environmental, as it maximizes the amount of renewable energy your home uses.

However, if youre only looking to save extra money, a solar battery might not be worth it for you. What we mean is, if you live in a state with full-retail net metering, youll be saving the same amount of money with a battery as you would without one. All the battery would be doing is adding thousands of dollars to your solar installation and providing you peace of mind in the event of a power outage.

You can read more about how your utility net metering plans impact the investment in a solar battery here.

It Only Makes Sense To Backup Your Critical Loads In Most Cases

For most American homes, it will only be prudent to install enough solar batteries to power the essentials. Because of the price associated with solar storage systems, installing enough batteries to meet 100% of your typical energy needs would simply cost too much.

Instead, youll want to work out whats known as your critical loads — the essential items that will keep running in the event of a power outage via energy from your batteries. These often include things like your refrigerator, freezer, small heaters, a few lights, medical equipment, and maybe a few outlets to charge devices.

Your solar installer should be able to help you determine what are the absolute necessities, and then design a battery system that is capable of meeting your requirements.

Solar Batteries: Dependable Emergency Power

Are solar panel batteries worth it? In terms of providing dependable backup power to keep you and your family safe and comfortable during uncertain times, yes. From a strictly financial standpoint, not necessarily.

Thanks to net metering, most Americans can upload their extra electricity to the utility grid and draw on it for future use for free. However, when the grid goes down, so will their solar system unless there is a battery backup system. With solar batteries, grid-tied system owners can experience a small bit of energy independence without having to sink thousands of dollars into an off-grid storage solution. It’s the best of both worlds!

How Solar Energy Works

Solar & Batteries – What’s Battery Backup Worth To You?

When you make the decision to go solar, youll have an array of solar panels installed on your roof. If you dont know how solar panels work, they collect energy from the sun and convert it into an electric current. This direct current electricity then passes through an inverter which turns it into an alternating current , which is the type of electricity we use in our homes.

Most home solar panel systems are connected to local power grid systems, which means that any excess energy produced by your solar energy system is fed back to the grid. If your utility company has a net metering program, you can receive credits for this excess energy. By contrast, if your solar system does not produce enough energy to power your home at any point, youll draw energy from the grid.

Inverter Replacement/dc Coupled Solution

The alternative to an AC coupled solution is to replace your existing solar inverter with one that works with a battery. String inverters need to be replaced every 10 years or so, so if you have a solar panel system thats at least five years old, you may want to think about swapping your existing inverter for an all-in-one solar and storage inverter option.

The primary benefit of a DC coupled solution is that your system will be more efficient that is, it will lose less of the energy your solar panels produce during the conversion process. However, this option will be more expensive upfront. Replacing your inverter to accommodate a battery can result in additional costs associated with system redesign and rewiring. However, the exact costs will always depend on your current system and the installer youre working with.
