How Much Do Solar Panels Cost For A 3000 Square Foot House

Solar Basics Pt 2: How Much Energy Does One Solar Panel Produce?

For a 3000 square feet house, installation of monocrystalline panels would cost between $19,000 and $42,000.

According to the Energy Information Administration , a house in the United States sizing around 3,000 square feet requires around 14,214 kWh annually, or 1,185 kWh per month. It further adds if that house has ample roof space such that there is no shading during the day, it would need between 19 and 30 premium solar panels to produce required electricity. Here, premium refers to a solar panels which has output wattage rating of about 400 watts . If we go with previous per kilowatt price , then installation cost range can be determined as follows:

19 panels * 400 kW per panel * 2.5 dollars per Watt = $19000

30 panels * 400 kW per panel * 3.5 dollars per Watt = $42000

So it can be said that installation cost of solar panels for a 3000 square feet house can range between $19,000 and $42,000. Average cost, thus, comes out to be / 2 = $30,500.

How Much Does It Cost To Manufacture A Solar Module In 2014

The answer depends on where it was manufacturedand GTM Research has the data.

How Much Does It Cost to Manufacture a Solar Module in 2014?

In four of the industry’s top solar manufacturing markets, manufacturing costs for multicrystalline silicon modules vary by up to 18 cents per watt. Assuming identical plant scale and value chain participation, GTM Research’s analysis in its November PV Pulse shows that factories based in China have the lowest module manufacturing costs, followed by Malaysia, Taiwan and the U.S.

China’s direct manufacturing cost, which does not include selling, general and administrative costs, interest, shipping, or warranty expenses, is 50 cents per watt.

GTM Research PV Pulse, November 2014

According to the report, the primary source of Chinas manufacturing cost advantage is lower pricing for key consumables along the PV value chain, mainly due to a large and competitive domestic ecosystem for materials like slurry, sawing wire, junction boxes, and frames. Production costs for Chinese material vendors are lower than they are for their Western counterparts, driving lower pricing.

GTM Research lead upstream solar analyst Shyam Mehta notes that many domestic consumables vendors are pure-play solar firms that rely on their component customers for revenue, meaning that component producers can exert significant pricing leverage on their vendors. Many larger wafer, cell and module vendors also produce key consumables internally .

What Exactly Is A Kilowatt

When it comes to figuring out the amount of power you are producing, you hear many words like watt and kilowatt. It takes 1000 watts of power to make 1 kilowatt.

Watts and kilowatts are measurements of power. Kilowatt-hours is the measurement of power a household is using.

To clarify some confusion about kWh, it is not a measurement of how much energy is being used in an hour. It is actually the measurement of how many kilowatts are needed to keep a 1000 watt electronic or appliance operating for an hour.

This means that if you put in a 100-watt lightbulb to light your living room, it will take approximately 10 hours to use 1 kWh. However, a gaming computer that uses 500 watts may take 2 hours to use 1 kWh.

Area Required For Solar Pv Power Plants

by Narasimhan·

Summary: 1 kW of solar panels require approximately 100 sqft, or 10 sqm., when used on rooftops and in small ground mounted installations.

You might have heard that solar power plants require significant amounts of land to generate power. How much area indeed is required for solar power plants?

Solar power plants, be they on rooftops or on the ground, require significant area. While solar power has some critical sustainability advantages over fossil-based thermal power , one of the key drawbacks of solar is that it recovers energy from a relatively diffuse energy source, sunlight. A 100 MW thermal power plant for instance would require less than 10% of the total area that a 100 MW solar PV power plant would.

Solar power plants require significantly larger land areas compared to conventional power plants. A 100 MW thermal power plant for instance would require less than 10% of the total area that a 100 MW solar PV power plant would.

How much area is indeed required for solar power plants?

That depends on the amount of kW of MW you would like to accommodate.

A simple rule of thumb is to take 100 sqft for every 1kW of solar panels.

Extrapolating this, a 1 MW solar PV power plant should require about 100000 sqft . However, owing to the fact that large ground mounted solar PV farms require space for other accessories, the total land required for a 1 MW of solar PV power plant will be about 4 acres.

Solar Tax Credit Rebates And Incentives

Residential solar projects are eligible for significant solar tax credits, rebates and incentives. All these solar incentives make solar panel systems trendy investment opportunities and the clean energy source is subject to tax breaks.

The Federal Investment Tax Credit is the best tax credit there is. You are eligible to get up to 26% of your initial investment cost back as tax credits. The ITC rate is 26% in 2020, 2021 and 2022, 22% in 2023, and 10% in 2024 and later.

Local and state incentives are also available if you want to boost your solar savings. On top of lower electricity bills, your state may offer a sales tax exemption, your local municipality may offer the same incentive and you will be eligible for a property tax exemption in case you install solar. The property tax exemption excludes the added value of your property from the property tax.

There are even further solar benefits to enjoy. In some areas, you may be eligible for one-time solar awards. That is the case with Wisconsin, where Focus on Energy can give you back around $500 for any solar project. Ask around to find out more about solar awards in your area.
