Many solar power company websites provide calculators for the average annual solar panel output per day in kWh for areas across the United States.
Combining all of the sunshine that falls on the solar panel over a 24-hour period, the average roof in the United States gets about four hours of full or usable sun a day.
Again, this number will vary depending whether you live in a cloudless desert or in foggy mountains.
As an example, the U.S. Department of Energy offers a map that shows a solar energy potential in each state of the USA. But goes on to caution that this estimate is based on a south facing array and that you must consider the tilt of your roof, citing that a solar array facing west rather than south can cause a nearly 11 percent output reduction.
But lets get back to the example so that we can have a starting point for considering the size of your domestic solar system.
If you have one 250-watt panel receiving four hours of sun, then you will get 1,000 watts or one kWh per day from that panel. If you have four panels, you will get 4 kWh per day.
If you have 33 panels, assuming a 30-day month, you will get 1,000 kWh per month.
Dealing With Limited Roof Space
Solar experts and manufacturers strongly recommend setting up the most energy-efficient solar panels for homes with not-so-spacious roof space. Highly-efficient panels are purposely for maximizing the wattages installed per square foot. Due to this, they can make up for the limited space.
Now, the question is, how can you determine if the solar panel is efficient? The computation for this is pretty straightforward: The individual wattage of the panel/ the area.
The panel that possesses the highest efficiency is the one that has higher wattages per square foot.
How Much Power Output Does Your Home Need
This all depends on two things: how much electricity you use, and how much of your home you want your solar panels to power.
If your household has a particularly high energy usage, or you want to solely rely on solar panels to power your home, wed recommend getting solar panels with a high output around 300 watts or more.
However, if you dont use much electricity day-to-day, or only want solar panels to subsidise some of your homes energy usage, you can choose solar panels with a lower output around 225 to 275 watts.
Most homes will install several solar panels, known as a solar panel system. A typical 3-4 bedroom house will require a 3-4kWp solar panel system, typically composed of 12-16 solar panels.

Youll rarely find these conditions in nature, so expect your solar panels output to be a little less than this peak rating provided by the manufacturer.
Once you know the wattage of your solar panel, you can use the following calculation to work out how much electricity your solar panel can produce in one day:
Solar panels watts x average hours of sunlight = daily watt-hours
This calculation relies on you knowing the number of sunlight hours your panel receives. You can either estimate this or use a solar calculator like the National Renewable Energy Labs solar resource maps. Lets look at some examples:
Your solar panel has a rating of 250 watts, and your home receives six hours of sunshine per day. Multiply 250 x 6, and we can calculate that this panel can produce 1,500 Wh, or 1.5 kWh of electricity per day.
On a cloudy day, solar panels will only generate between 10% and 25% of their normal output. For the same 250-watt panel with six hours of cloudy weather, you may only get 0.15-0.37 kWh of electricity per day.
Upgrade to a 400-watt panel, and with the same amount of sunshine, you would now get 2,400 Wh, or 2.4 kWh of electricity per day. On a cloudy day, the electricity generated may only be 0.24-0.6 kWh per day.

To estimate how many kW are needed to run a house, you can divide your annual kWh consumption by the specific yield per kilowatt of solar capacity. For example, if your home needs 15,000 kWh of energy per year, and solar panels have a specific yield of 1,500 kWh/kWp in your location, you will need a system size of around 10 kilowatts.

How Much Power Am I Using
A kilowatt-hour is a basic unit of energy, which is equal to power times time . Your electric bills show how the average number of kWh you use per month.
For example, a 50 Watt light bulb left on for one hour would be 50 Watt hours, and 20 50 watt light bulbs running for one hour would be 1 kilowatt-hour . According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average monthly electricity consumption for a residential utility customer is about 903 kWh per month.
Divide your average monthly usage by 30 days in a month to get your daily usage. If youre going by the national average, then you should be using about 30 kWh per day. Next, figure out the average amount of sunlight you get per day. The US ranges from about 4 hours 6 hours of sunlight per day, on average, see the below map. Lets estimate you get about five hours per day to generate that 30 kWh you use. So the kWh divided by the hours of sun equals the kW needed. Or, 30 kWh / 5 hours of sun = 6 kW of AC output needed to cover 100% of your energy usage.

After submitting your address, the tool will provide Solar Radiation data in your location. Itll display the monthly and annual average Peak Sun Hours that your receive.
For example, I entered an address in Austin, TX, and the tool estimates that the annual average Peak Sun Hours in this location is 5.52. This means that on average, this location receives 5.52kWh/m² of sunlight energy per day.
Using the previous formula, the size of the system required to produce 1000 kWh/month is calculated as such:
System Wattage = Monthly Energy production ÷
System Wattage = 1000 kWh ÷
System Wattage = 6.03 kW
The average residential solar panel is rated at 330 Watts . So a system of this size would consist of about 18-20 solar panels.
