Buying Your Ikea Kitchen

IKEA | Why we’ve switched to thick veneer kitchen worktops

First off, wait for IKEA to have their kitchen sale. Usually this happens four times throughout the year, so plan your renovation accordingly. IKEAs kitchen sale usually works along the premise of the more you spend, the more you save, starting at around 10% off. The catch is the 10% off is most often in the form of IKEA gift cards.

When we ordered our kitchen for the Beige Bungalow, the sale was as follows:

  • 10% back in IKEA gift cards for every $1,000 spent
  • 15% back in IKEA gift cards for every $1,000 spent with the purchase of 1 appliance
  • 20% back in IKEA gift cards for every $1,000 spent with the purchase of 2 or more appliances

Are Cabinets Solid Wood

Ikea Kitchen Cabinet Solid Wood

Sides, a top, a bottom, doors, and shelves or drawers comprise a cabinet. The front and doors of the cabinets are often constructed of actual solid wood. This is the anatomy of a cabinet, and it is vital to understand what material is utilized on each element of the construction.

All wood is made up of tiny tubes called cells. Each cell contains air inside it, so it’s very fragile. To protect the fibers within the wood that would be exposed if the wood were cut straight through, they are wrapped with a thin layer of fiber called “glue.” This glue also helps the wood retain its shape and support any weight that might be placed upon it.

The term “wood” refers to the plant species from which it is taken, all the way down to the cellular level. A tree is a living organism that grows branches that will eventually form leaves and flowers, sending down roots that will eventually form more trees. Within each tree there are different types of wood depending on how the tree is growing. Some woods such as pine trees have straight, sturdy trunks with many boards attached side by side, making them ideal for building projects. Other trees such as maple have thinner, softer wood that is good for creating fine furniture. Still other trees such as oak contain lots of small holes within their wood where insects live. When harvesting timber, it is important to remember that not every part of every tree is useful for anything other than fuel.

Ikea Solid Wood Table

IKEA has an extremely large offer when it comes to solid wood tables. Its hard to choose from so many!

However, my favorite ones are the NORDEN extendable table in oak and the MÖRBYLÅNGA round table. Its tabletop comes in a gorgeous thick oak veneer variety.

The NORDEN is a great option when looking for a solid wood kitchen table and the MÖRBYLÅNGA, a round table, is an excellent idea in case youre limited in space.

    Does Ikea Furniture Last

There is a cult of Ikea, I get it. And if there were a ring leader, Id be in the running, but the truth is a lot of Ikea furniture isnt built to last.

The majority of their classic pieces are a combination of MDF and wood pegs, which over time, dont do well with moving or being shifted around a room.

Be aware that the prices do betray the quality at Ikea. If you are buying a full size bookshelf for less than $100, youre likely going to see some warping and bowing and wont own that shelf forever.

Case in point, I bought a PAX wardrobe for a bookshelf in my office, and within a few weeks, the $15 shelves inside were completely bent and warped.

    Positive Ikea Kitchen Cabinet Reviews

“I love their products, and we did order a whole bunch of kitchen cabinets, lights, and other kitchen related things.” â Debbie G., BBB

“I have purchased my kitchen, bedroom furniture, a PAX closet system, all of my dishes, my TV entertainment center, and my modular sectional from IKEA in St. Louis. I built all of the products myself. The kitchen was over 400 boxes and only one piece had an issue with the assembly.” â Sam T., BBB

Healthy Cabinet Brands Listed By Material

Healthy cabinets could be made of solid wood, plywood, pressed wood without added formaldehyde, or metal.

Sometimes glass or MgO board can be used.

Of course, some are sensitive to the terpenes of wood, and wood can also pick up and hold onto secondary odors so I have included non-wood options on the list.

The cabinets in my tiny house are solid wood, but the reason cabinets are made of engineered wood products is that solid wood can warp in the kitchen.

    Ikea Kitchen Cabinet Rail

This is one of the most ingenious parts of the IKEA kitchen design. There is no need to find a stud at the back of every cabinet to screw to, while simultaneously leveling your cabinets. In the IKEA design, your mount a rail directly to your wall and the desired height. Using the longest level you can fit in your space, level the rail and screw into the wall studs. This way you are guaranteed to hit several studs no matter where your IKEA cabinets start and stop. If you are wondering how to find the studs behind the drywall, pick yourself up a . This is the same process when installing your upper IKEA cabinets.

Once your rail is in place, go ahead and hang your cabinets. The upper cabinets will truly hang, while the lower cabinets should have their entire weight supported by the floor, using on the rail system to keep them tight to the wall. If you are using IKEA cabinet legs, go ahead and adjust them snug to the floor at this point. If you built your own kicks, everything should be perfectly level and snug.

Ikea Doors And Drawers: Several Classes

In the IKEA system, the cabinet doors and drawers are purchased separately from the cabinet box system. This is what allows consumers to choose the cabinet style they prefer. There are many styles of drawers/doors for IKEA kitchen cabinets, and they fall into four classes of materials:

    • Class 1: real wood and MDF: At this time, only four lines of IKEA doors contain any amount of real wood, and no doors are made entirely of solid natural wood: the LAXARBY and BJORKET lines , FILIPSTAD line , and EKESTAT line .
    • Class 2: MDF and foil: This class is the main category of IKEA doors, with melamine foil and/or thermofoil applied to a fiberboard base: RINGHULT line GRIMSLOV and MARSTA lines BROKHLT, JARSTA, and EDSERUM lines and TINGSYRD and HAGGEBY lines .
    • Class 3: MDF and paints: Glossy paint is applied directly to the particleboard for a bright, in-your-face style: VEDDINGE line , FLADIE line , and BODBYN and HITTARP lines
    • Class 4: glass or metal: These doors may contain some particleboard, but their chief appearance is that of glass or metal: the JUTIS line , and GREVSTA line

How Is The Quality Of Ikea Kitchen Cabinets

S!dequest: Solid wood counter top for the pantry

The first thing I hear when I talk to people about IKEA kitchens and IKEA kitchen cabinets is, But it isnt real wood!. They are suspicious of MDF cabinets.

Almost every off-the-shelf cabinet system I looked into for our project was made with particle board or MDF cabinet boxes. The next step up from this is cabinet grade plywood , but there is a significant debate over whether this is actually superior. Plus, when I had our project quoted with this type of cabinetry, our price nearly doubled.

Yes, you could go all the way to custom-made, solid wood cabinet boxes and doors. However, for most people this just wasnt a feasible option. Yes, you can save some money on custom cabinets by using local builders or smaller companies, but it is still far more expensive than IKEA kitchen cabinets. When I had our project quoted using a local custom cabinet builder, the price came in over $15,000, and that didnt include installation.

You Have To Check Everything Once Its Delivered

Check everything as soon as it is delivered, even if it takes a few hours. IKEA will happily correct anything that is missing or wrong!

We live 90 miles away from IKEA, and we didnt want the cabinets delivered right away. So we paid for a delivery service. They brought everything right into our house, a process that took over an hour. All of the kitchen pieces were in boxes with strange pseudo-Swedish names.

At the time, I was so overwhelmed with our renovation that I couldnt deal with the stacks and stacks . So I didnt really go through the boxes until we began assembly. Then we discovered that we were missing various small parts, like some shelves, and that a couple of cabinets were the wrong size. IKEA was a dream to work with on this, though I was actually a little shocked, given how DIY the shopping process is there. I called their post-purchase help desk, and they FedExed the missing pieces straight to our door. They did this even when I belatedly discovered a missing piece over four weeks later, during our final installation.
