Watch a Total Lunar Eclipse (NASA Science Live)

This eclipse favors the western half of North America, the Hawaiian Islands, eastern Asia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the eastern half of Australia. Along the Atlantic Seaboard, the Moon will set while it begins to emerge from total eclipse. The Moon will pass to the north of the center of the shadow, and, as was the case in May, totality will be unusually long, lasting 1 hour 25 minutes. We might expect a moderately dark eclipse, possibly featuring a brownish hue across the lower part of the Moon, contrasted by a brighter coppery red upper rim.

Times listed are Eastern Time.

  • Moon enters penumbra: 3:02 a.m.
  • Moon enters umbra: 4:09 a.m.
  • Total lunar eclipse begins: 5:16 a.m.
  • Middle of the eclipse: 5:59 a.m.
  • Total eclipse ends: 6:41 a.m.
  • Moon leaves umbra: 7:49 a.m.
  • Moon leaves penumbra: 8:56 a.m.
  • Magnitude of eclipse: 1.359

To produce this eclipse, the Moons shadow falls chiefly on the north polar regions of Earth. It will be visible from an eastern slice of Greenland and all of Iceland, as well as most of Europe , northeast Africa, and in varying extent over much of western and central Asia. Greatest eclipsewith nearly 7/8 of the Suns diameter hiddenoccurs at local sunset over the West Siberian Plain, near the city of Nizhnevertovsk .

  • Partial solar eclipse begins: 4:58 a.m.
  • Greatest eclipse: 7:00 a.m.
  • Partial eclipse ends: 9:02 a.m.

The dark shadow cone of the Moon will completely miss the Earth, passing approximately 750 miles below the South Pole. But the Moons outer shadowits penumbradoes scrape a part of the Southern Hemisphere. This causes a partial solar eclipse, visible to a varying extent around sunset across a swath of the South Pacific Ocean and South Americas southern and western portions: Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, southern Peru, southern Bolivia, western Paraguay, and a tiny slice of Brazil.

The greatest eclipse will take place over the South Pacific Ocean, 300 miles to the northwest of Yelcho, a Chilean Antarctic research base in South Bay, Doumer Island. The normally thick horizon haze may redden the Suns light, giving it the appearance of a slice of cantaloupe melon.

Times listed are Eastern Daylight Time.

  • Partial solar eclipse begins: 2:45 p.m.
  • Greatest eclipse: 4:41 p.m.
  • Partial eclipse ends: 6:37 p.m.
  • Magnitude of eclipse: 0.639

Taking A Bite Out Of The Sun

Most cultures viewed a solar eclipse as some mythic creature devouring the daytime Sun. In ancient China, it was a celestial dragon, and in southeast Asia, they imagined it to be a giant turtle, frog, or toad.

In Korea, it was thought that fire dogs were trying to steal the Sun or Moon, and when they bit it, an eclipse resulted. For the Vikings it was a hungry wolf named Sköll that raced across the sky, hunting down and eating the Sun. Even to cultures like Greece and Rome, which had enough mathematical and observational knowledge to be able to predict eclipses, they were often viewed as bad omens, portents of evil, and astrological events to be feared.

In Hindu mythology, it was believed that the demon Rahu stole an elixir of immortality, called amrita, but was beheaded by the god Vishnu before he could fully swallow it. Consequently, the demons severed head, forever alive, floats around and occasionally devours the Sun. To this day, in India, people make noise by banging pots and pans and setting off fireworks during a solar eclipse to scare Rahu away and make him cough up the Sun.

A northwestern Native American tribe has a legend that a solar eclipse is the result of a quarrel between a great bear and the Sun, ending with the bear taking a huge bite out of it. In fact, the tribes name for a solar eclipse translates to Sun got bit by a bear.

Solar Eclipse April 2022 Astrology

The new moon in Taurus on Saturday, April 30, 2022, is the second new moon of the month. It is also a solar eclipse and marks the beginning of a new eclipse phase that lasts until October 25, 2022.

Located at 10°28 Taurus, the April 30 solar eclipse is very well-aspected for such an important turning point. It aligns with Uranus which can be a difficult placement. But as shown in the horoscope below, the harmonious blue aspect to Mars makes it a fortunate conjunction.

There are, in fact, only positive aspects in the solar eclipse April 2022 horoscope. A total lack of challenging red aspects makes this an especially fortunate eclipse. There are no major fixed stars around 10° Taurus. But there is an amorous asteroid that complements the sensually exciting Mars-Uranus energy.

The first solar eclipse of 2022 is set to take place this weekend, though it will only be visible in certain parts of the world.

The partial solar eclipse on 30 April will occur in one of the least populated areas of the planet, mostly across Antarctica, the South Pacific and Southern Oceans.

Several countries in South America will witness the celestial spectacle including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay with the best land-based view located at a Chilean Antarctic research base on Doumer Island.

At this point, nearly two-thirds of the Suns diameter will be hidden by the Moon, as the Earths satellite passes in front of it.

The eclipse will begin just before sunset, when the Sun is low in the sky and sometimes visible without needing specialist viewing equipment. It will begin at 4.32pm in Santiago, Chile, and last for aproximately an hour and a half.

What Is An Eclipse

Map of Partial Solar Eclipse on April 30, 2022

The two types of eclipses that we witness here on Earth are solar eclipses and lunar eclipses:

  • A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, partially or entirely blocking out its light. Solar eclipses are visible only in certain areas and require eye protection to be viewed safely.
  • A lunar eclipse occurs when the full Moon enters the shadow of Earth, which cuts off all or part of the sunlight reflected off the Moon. Lunar eclipses are technically visible from the entire night side of Earth, but during a penumbral eclipse, the dimming of the Moons illumination is slight. Learn more about lunar terminology.

Not all eclipses are the same, however. There are a few different ways for lunar and solar eclipses to happen:

  • A total eclipse occurs when the Moon or Sun is entirely blocked out.
  • During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is completely obscured by the dark center of Earths shadow , giving the Moon a dark, reddish hue.
  • During a total solar eclipse, the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon, resulting in a brief period of awe-inspiring darkness.
  • A partial eclipse occurs when only part of the Moon or Sun is obscured.
  • An annular eclipse is a type of solar eclipse. Annular eclipses are similar to total solar eclipses , but in an annular eclipse, the Moons apparent size is smaller than the Suns, meaning that the Sun is not completely obscured. This results in a very bright ring of light called an annulus.

    Solar Eclipse Viewing Tips

WARNING: Looking directly at the sun can lead to blindness and other forms of permanent eye damage if you aren’t wearing proper eye protection.

âMake a safe sun projector with binoculars

To safely observe the sun or watch an eclipse, you must use special protective eyewear or certified eclipse glasses. Basic sunglasses will not protect you, even if they have UV protection. In fact, the safest way to observe an eclipse is through indirect methods, using a pinhole camera that’s easy to scrounge together with equipment at home.

If you want to use a camera, make sure to use special solar filters on your equipment. Your smartphone also needs protective filters, and if you use it, stick to a simple, wide-angle snap to protect the camera.

NASA advises extreme caution during solar eclipse viewings, emphasizing that it is safe to remove your glasses only during total phases of a total solar eclipse. For partial eclipses, keep the glasses on at all times.
