Solar Powered Electrical Outlet For Shed

Work Out How Much Power You Need

Hyperadobe Off-Grid Solar Shed Office – Electrical Outlets

Do you just need a couple of lights for occasional use, or do you plan to run broadband, a computer, heating, or a host of power tools?

The amount of power you require dictates the type of system you install, so calculating your power requirements is key to setting up a system that works for you.

provide a useful chart that matches the power consumption of electrical items you intend to use in your shed, to the power rating required from your inverter, which well discuss in the next section.

For example, a 5W mobile phone charger will require an inverter with a continuous power rating of at least 150W, whereas a 400W desktop computer would require at least 600W. To work out the power rating of your inverter, simply add up the required wattage of all the equipment youll be using. If you need to plug in a computer and mobile phone, the inverter would need a continuous power rating of 150W + 600W = 750W.

Using A Power Inverter With A Battery

If you dont have a solar-powered light, but you do have some battery-powered light that requires electricity like an LED work light or headlamp, then the most practical way to light your shed without electricity is by using a power inverter. Power inverters are devices that allow you to use any regular household power outlet to power up your battery-operated devices. You need a 12V DC plug, and you can attach it straight to the back of your battery-powered light voila!

With how to light a shed without electricity, the most practical method is by using a power inverter with a battery-powered light:

1. Take your power inverter and plug it into your light battery pack. Now, make sure that the switch on the inverter is turned to IN .

To use a battery-operated light, you need to plug it into an outlet. One plug goes into the OUT side, and one goes into the IN side. Make sure that all three plugs are plugged in tightly.

3. Turn your light on, and you know how to light a shed without electricity using an inverter!

Why Choose A Solar Panel For Sheds System Over Traditional Residential Solar Panels

Though you can mount solar panels on the roof of your home, this isnt the most ideal solution for everyone. Not only are roof-based or free standing residential solar arrays expensive, but theyre often also very invasive. The design and aesthetic appearance of some panels does owe itself well to certain homes, but they often stand out very prominently against the backdrop of an otherwise normal-looking residential area.

The benefits of a solar panel for shed use system is that it:

  • Makes use of otherwise redundant space
  • Isnt disruptive to your home or small businesses appearance
  • Costs much less than a larger residential or small business solar panel system

With these benefits in mind, the crucial factor you need to consider is whether or not a shed system is going to be adequate enough to cover your energy needs. If youre trying to cover 100% of your power requirements with solar power, then unless you own a very big shed, its likely that you may need to use a larger roof-based series of cells or a freestanding photovoltaic cell array.

However, if your shed is large and more like an outhouse, you probably have a good chance of being able to provide all of your energy needs through the use of a solar power for shed installation system. On the other hand, absolutely everybody can harness enough power using their shed roof if theyre simply looking to power their shed lighting or power tools.

How Do Solar Panels Work

Solar panels contain photovoltaic cells, which absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current . The DC then passes through an inverter and converts into alternating current , which is then used to power your shed. Now you know how solar panels power your shed, lets look at the key devices you need to know about:

What You Need To Build A Solar Shed

Best Solar Shed Lights
  • Shed: The shed must have a roof large enough for several linked solar panels, and the roof should be southward-facing . A 120 square foot shed is a minimum size to carry four 100-watt panels for AC solar electricity.
  • Solar panels permanently attached to the sheds roof that collect sunlight.
  • Charge controller: Power from the photovoltaic panels feeds into the charge controller located in the solar shed. The charge controller regulates the flow of electricity into the batteries and keeps them working at optimal condition.
  • Fuse box: The fuse box is a safety device that gives the user a way to shut down flow of the electricity to work on the system, if needed.
  • Batteries: Solar systems collected electricity is stored in batteries until it is used. Several batteries are usually required.
  • Inverter: Because the power that comes out of the batteries is direct current , an inverter is required in order to use alternating current devices such as corded tools.
  • Power strip or outlet: Batteries feed into a power strip or outlet for plugging in tools or lights.

Using A Power Inverter With A Solar

If you dont have a battery-powered light and are unwilling to purchase one, then how to light your shed without electricity is as simple as how to power a shed without electricity using a portable solar panel. Portable solar panels allow you to convert the sunlight into electric energy, which you can then use to power your lights or other battery-powered devices by connecting them with alligator clips.

To light a shed without electricity with an inverter, all you need is to use a portable solar panel:

1. Go outside and place your solar-powered light as close to the window. It may take some fiddling around with how you angle it, but once you find the right way to brighten up your shed without electricity, your light should start glowing.

3. Turning your light on and brightening a shed without electricity is as simple as how to power a shed without electricity using a portable solar panel!

2. Take your inverter and plug it into the solar-powered light and then to a regular outlet . If you dont have an outlet nearby, make sure to bring your extension cord when how to light up a shed without electricity.

How To Install A Solar Kit In Your Shed

Your shed solar kit just arrived and youre very excited to get it all set up. While installation instructions might vary depending on kit, here are some generalized steps to get you started.

Step 1: Mount the Panels

Whether you have to mount the solar panels to your shed roof depends on the number of panels you have as well as how much space is available on your roof. If you only have two or three panels, then you can attach them via Z-brackets to the roof.

What if your shed roof is small and you cant fit all the solar panels up there? Ground-mounting is another option.

Step 2: Install the Controller

The rest of the installation shouldnt be tough, as many solar panel kits for DIYers include pre-drilled holes so you can figure everything out quickly. You must put the controller where you can access it, but that doesnt necessarily mean it has to be highly visible.

Step 3: Place the Inverter

The location of your inverter must be carefully selected. It needs to be close to the other components of your solar power system but away from trees, shrubs, greenery, and landscaping. The inverter gets hot when its operating, so it can be a hazard if it doesnt have enough room.

Step 4: Connect the Wiring

This is the most complex part, as you need to wire the solar kit together. The solar panels must be attached to the regulator via wires, then the controller to the battery and the battery to the inverter.

Step 5: Test the Solar Kit

Building a Solar Powered Workshop

Along with large-draw tools like electric saws or sanders, electric heaters place the greatest demand on your solar sheds system.

Given the 1,500-watt draw of even a small electric space heater, its typically best to explore passive heating options like windows, skylight insulation, and painting the shed a dark color before using solar power to create artificial heat in the shed.

Do Solar Panels That Are Unclean Generate Less Power

It is crucial to keep the glass portion of your solar panel as spotless as possible. If the glass surface is greasy or filthy, the efficiency will be decreased. To prevent permanent markings, make sure the glass surface is free of bird and bat droppings. The glass surface should be cleaned with a gentle, wet cloth.

The Answer To Installing Off

Assembling and wiring all of the various components of a solar system can be a complicated process for a novice. Not to mention, it can get quite expensive. Especially if you make any mistakes along the way.

For us, the ultimate answer was to use a component Kodiak/Apex solar panel & generator system from a company called Inergy.

The panels and wiring all fit and plug together with ease. And in place of using a separate controller and battery system, a single small battery/generator unit placed in the cabin handles storing and dispersing the electric.

More importantly, it eliminated the need for us to install an electrical panel and outlets in such a small space. For us, it was a huge savings in time and money.

Making it even better, the battery power pack and outlet unit is portable. Meaning, when we need to, we can easily just lift it up and take it anywhere on the farm where we might need instant remote power. Having said that, there are numerous other solar options on the market even Tesla has started making them! This article by EcoWatch gives further details.

Here is a quick look at how we installed our system, including a simple and inexpensive way to install solar panels to any roof.

Wind An Alternative To A Solar Shed

Solar LED Shed Lighting and Power Kits

Wind turbines need a steady wind to work properly. Roof mounted turbines are cheaper, but less efficient because theyre closer to the ground.

Pole mounted turbines are more effective by comparison even if theres not much wind blowing. Wind turbines generate energy during the winter months, when there are fewer hours of sunlight.

During the summer, light winds can reduce the amount of power generated by wind turbines. A combination of wind and solar power gives the best of both worlds by using both wind and solar energy.

This setup allows people to use their sheds as a source of renewable energy while still having access to electricity when needed.

How To Install Off

Lets face it, installing an off-grid solar power system to a small cabin, shed or barn can be a bit of a challenge for anyone unfamiliar with solar power.

For starters, there is the task of figuring out how and where to attach the solar panels. And then of course, figuring out everything else from batteries, to wiring, controlling the charge and more.

One thing is for sure, we certainly qualified as rookies when it came to installing solar power to our tiny cabin at the farm.

Other than a few small solar lighting projects, we had never tackled installing real solar power.

And by real power, we mean enough energy to run indoor and outdoor lighting, a coffee maker, laptops, TV, and a few other small appliances when needed.

We knew although our system wouldnt need to be huge, it had to contain the basics:

  • Solar panels for charging
  • A battery or battery bank for storage
  • A charge controller to control the battery charge
  • Wiring / electrical panel / outlets

And we also knew it would have to be easy enough for two solar rookies to figure out.

As you will see below, the project actually turned out to be quite simple to install. And that includes an easy and economical way to install solar panels to a roof as well.

How Solar Works: A Quick Primer

A home solar kit has four major components:

Panels. Rectangular panels absorb sunlight via photovoltaic cells, which are sandwiched between material that generates positive and negative charges. The number of panels required depends on the amount of power you need for your lights, heating/cooling system, computer, etc.

Batteries. These are serious, and very heavy, batteries. If youre picturing a couple of D batteries that go in a flashlight, think again. We ordered a single 12V battery and then realized we needed a second one. Remember the energy is being used and replenished constantly. Plus, youll need a reservoir for those days when the sun dont shine.

Charge controller. Think of this handy device as a buffer between energy collected and energy used . It fiercely protects your batteries from overuse or taxing variations, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Inverter. All that energy collected from the sun is direct current and needs to be converted into alternating current . An inverter is a modest little box that does the job quite efficiently.

Connect The Battery And Solar Panel To The Solar Charge Controller

Connect the battery to the charge controller. The charge controller should light up or turn on.

Note: I wired my battery to my solar charge controller via the fuse block because only one wire can be attached to my batterys terminals. Typically the battery is wired directly to the charge controller, with an inline fuse on the positive battery cable.

Connect the solar panel to the solar charge controller. The charge controller should indicate that the panel has been properly connected.

At this point, you can program your charge controller for the battery youre using. Im using a sealed lead acid battery, so I chose that option. Refer to your controllers manual to learn how to program it.

Your solar panel is now charging your battery. Pretty cool.

Heres what my setup looked like at this point:

Now we just need to connect the LEDs and our solar-powered shed lights will be done.

Its always good to have a backup in life, especially when the power goes out. Gas-powered generators can do the trick, but theyre loud, emit smelly fumes, and require a place for storing gasoline safely. They also contribute to climate change.

Solar generators, on the other hand, are clean, easy to use, don’t require fossil fuels, and are becoming more and more affordable as solar technology improves. They can be particularly useful in emergency situations where other fuel supplies are cut off or difficult to access. Solar generators typically capture the suns energy via stationary or portable solar panels that are sold separately, convert it into electrical power, and store it in a battery for later use.

We researched the market to recommend the best generators that are compatible with solar panels.
