A handful of entrepreneurs think solar-powered cars are poised for their day in the sun.

Lightyear, a startup in the Netherlands, is developing a four-door car whose solar cells can generate enough electricity to power brief outings after a day of sitting in the sun. While the companys Lightyear One resembles a conventional sedan, Aptera Motors Corp. of San Diego is taking another route. It is stretching the traditional image of a passenger vehicle by developing a two-seater featuring three wheels and a dolphin-shaped body.

These and other solar-power vehicles now in development are the descendants of spindly, solar-powered contraptions that gear heads from around the globe have been racing across the Australian Outback for decades. All feature on their exteriors solar cells that work much like the larger solar panels seen along roads and on residential rooftops, converting sunlight into electricity and storing it in an onboard battery pack.

Determine How Many Kwh You Need Every Day

The first step is to find out how many kWh are needed to drive your car. If you keep track of mileage over a year, this step can be pretty easy. If not, you can estimate using an average number of miles per day.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average American drives about 13,500 miles per year, or about 40 miles per day. Lets use that as a baseline. Here are the most efficient electric cars for 2022, excluding plug-in hybrid cars:

As a rough estimate, youll probably need somewhere between 6 and 12 solar panels to charge your electric car. But, you can get a more exact estimate by using www.fueleconomy.gov.

On fueleconomy.gov, you can look up the make and model of your electric vehicle. The website will provide your cars MPGe and the kWh needed to drive 100 miles.

For example, a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range plus RWD needs 23.7 kWh to travel 100 miles.

So, if you drive about 1200 miles per month, you can figure out your electricity needs as follows:

23.7 kWh/ 100 miles x 1200 miles per month = 284.4 kWh

That means you need 284.4 kWh per month from your solar panel system to power your electric vehicle.

On average, a single 380-watt solar panel can generate about 45 kWh per month, but that number fluctuates based on where you live and the type of panel you use.

The fluctuations make it hard to say exactly how many panels youll need to power your EV.

But, in our example, youd need about six 380-watt solar panels .

    How Much Energy Does It Take To Charge An Ev

    First, well need to put a number on how much electricity your EV will use per day.

    To get this, well need the number of miles traveled per day and the fuel efficiency rating of the EV. There are a few different fuel efficiency measurements for EVs, heres what you might come across when researching:

    • Miles per gallon equivalent
    • Kilowatt hours per 100 miles

    The third rating, miles per kWh, is the easiest to work with for our purposes.

    If you cant find it, simply take the MPGe and divide it by 33.705.

    MPGe / 33.705 = mi/kWh

    So lets use the super popular Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD as an example, which gets 129 MPGe or 3.82 miles per kWh, and will likely to eligible for the $7,500 new EV tax credit beginning in 2023.

    Now that we have an efficiency rating, we simply divide the miles traveled per day by the number of miles a Tesla Model Y can travel per kWh.

    37 miles per day / 3.82 miles per kWh = 9.69 kWh per day

    This figure is the average amount of energy a Tesla Model Y uses per day and how much solar capacity the driver needs to keep it charged. Next, lets see how many solar panels it takes to generate 9.69 kWh of electricity per day.

    The average modern solar panel can put out around 350 watts under full sun, and gets between 3 and 7 peak sun hours per day, depending on where you live. That means our solar panel makes between 1.05 to 2.45 kWh of electricity every day .

    Lets say you get 1.75 kWh per day, per panel. Youd need just over five panels to make enough energy to charge a Tesla Model 3 battery and get 40 miles of range. Thats not very many! Of course, the number of panels increases if you need more than a 40-mile range.

    Using the same math, you can determine that youll need about seven 350-watt panels to charge a Nissan Leaf. On the high side, youd need 10 panels to make enough energy to drive 40 miles in a Porsche Taycan 4S. Clearly, that is a car that doesnt sip the sun juice.
