Classified as “moderate” by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center , the G2 geomagnetic storm, which pummeled our planet on Sunday , was the result of a solar wind stream, or charged particles from the sun, striking Earth’s magnetic field. A second storm, classified as a G1 or “minor” storm, may hit sometime today, NOAA predicted.

If another storm does hit, NOAA reported that high-latitude power systems could be impacted, which could potentially lead to issues for power grids and GPS devices. Spacecraft in orbit also could be affected, due to an increase in high-energy electrons within the magnetosphere, as well as animal behavior, as some migratory animals rely on Earth’s magnetic field to navigate, Newsweek reported.

The worst recorded solar storm in history is the 1859 solar storm, better known as the Carrington event. It was so powerful that it caused sparks and fires in telegraph machines and caused power grid failures. However, if the entire history of the Earth is considered, this is not even close to what the planet has experienced. A study has analyzed tree ring data and found out that the worst solar storm to hit the Earth occurred in 774 CE in an event now known as the Miyake event and it was so powerful that the solar storm started multiple forest fires. The data comes from a study published in Nature journal where a group of Japanese researchers analyzed tree ring data to find out about the existence of this solar storm. According to it, this particular solar event took place between 774?775 CE. It is estimated that its intensity was 10 times higher than the Carrington event. The evidence was found in Cedar trees in Japan which all show a huge spike in carbon-14. What is truly interesting is the way these researchers confirmed that this spike in carbon – 14 as it is not conclusive evidence of a solar storm.

Dangerous Solar Storm Can Strike The Earth Tomorrow

While it is impossible to calculate the intensity of this incoming solar storm, it can be expected that the overall impact would be higher than the usual solar storms. This happens because the CIR rips open the magnetosphere and allows easier passage of the solar particles. A solar storm between G2-class and G3-class can be expected, although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has not released any advisory regarding this. We should be aware that a strong solar storm can disrupt GPS and cause shortwave radio frequency blackouts. A severe solar storm can even interrupt mobile data, internet reception and cause power grid failure. However, such a strong solar storm has not been seen since the Carrington event in 1859.
