Before moving east, lets talk about Michigan. As in Tennessee, only a very tiny sliver of the far, far Southeastern portion of the state will be in the path and that will be right along the edge. Were not talking about Detroit, either its not even close. Ditto Monroe or Adrian theyre not in the path. Not even Temperance or Lambertville will see totality, either they both lie outside the path! We mean only a few square miles of the absolute tiniest, most southeastern slice of Michigan is in the path. I-75 is in the path, coming north out of Toledo but only as far as the exit at Erie Road! Theres just not many places in Michigan to see totality, but if youre set on doing it from here, the Lost Peninsula Marina will see over a minute. Anywhere east of state road 125 will be in the path, but keep in mind youre near the northern limit this means that edge effects will reduce the amount of actual totality you see. The Bedford Hills golf club is barely on the edge, and anywhere west of that is not going to see totality. Best of luck if youre viewing from Michigan but if you do get to see totality, tell us your story! The Path Of Annular Solar Eclipse Over Eastern Brazil

When Will The Next Solar Eclipse Be Visible In North America

The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. is expected on April 8, 2024, and on October 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse will also be visible.

“Predicting the occurrence of eclipses is an ancient science,” Kerss said. “About 2,000 years ago, the Greeks built a bronze computer called the Antikythera mechanism, which could predict events involving the sun and moon, including eclipses.

“Today, with our current knowledge of the orbital properties of both the Earth and the moon, we can calculate the precise circumstances of eclipses all over the globe, thousands of years into the future.”

The next total solar eclipse to occur globally is expected on April 20, 2023, but this will be visible only from south and east Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Antarctica.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Coahuila

The total eclipse enters the US just a few seconds after 13:27CDT, at a point in Eagle Pass TX, where the Rio Grande takes a wide bend just southwest of Gonzalez Elementary School. Eagle Pass sees 4m24s of totality at that same time.

Moving up through Texas, the path of totality splits San Antonio in half. Here, youll want to be as far northwest as you can be locations in the middle of downtown are NOT in the path. Out at UT San Antonio, folks will see 2m30s, starting just after 13:33CDT. If you can take the drive west on I-10, Kerrville is just about on centerline, and youll get 4m24s just after 13:32CDT.

Austin is just inside the southern limit. Closer to the centerline lie Temple and Waco .

San Angelo, Wichita Falls and Abilene are NOT in the path! You have to get southeast to see totality! And Houston is also outside the show. Folks there will only see a 94% partial eclipse somewhat mildly interesting, but not amazingly exciting like those only about 60 miles northwest of you are seeing! Ditto for Corpus Christi you are NOT in the path!

But if youre staying in the DFW area, here are some timings you can count on:

  • Dealey Plaza: 3m46s at 13:40:30CDT
  • Irving: 3m24s at 13:40:30CDT
  • Love Field: 3m32s just before 13:41CDT
  • DFW Airport: 2m58s just before 13:41CDT
  • UT at Arlington: 3m16s just after 13:40CDT
  • Fort Worth Zoo: 2m32s just after 13:40CDT
  • Plano: 3m25s just after 13:41CDT

How To Safely Watch A Solar Eclipse

During any solar eclipse, it is imperative to wear special glasses with filters designed for eclipse watching to prevent eye damage. Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes sufficiently.

During a total solar eclipse, the path of totality is a narrow corridor approximately 100 to 115 km wide where the Sun appears to be completely covered by the Moon for a short period of time . This is the most spectacular part of the eclipse, as those who are lucky enough to be in this corridor are able to see the Sun’s corona, the chromosphere, prominences and streamers. Proper eye protection is essential before and after totality.

For those outside the path of totality, the Sun appears to be partially covered by the Moon . When watching a partial solar eclipse, proper eye protection is required at all times.

If you don’t have special glasses designed for eclipse watching, there are other ways to watch an eclipse, such as an eclipse projector, which you can easily learn how to make.

How Can I See The Solar Eclipse

The most important rule when viewing solar eclipses is to wear special glasses approved by the International Organization for Standardization . Never look at the sun directly without appropriate eye protection, as your eyes could be irreparably damaged. The exception is when the moon completely covers the sun during totality then it’s safe to look at the sun without glasses.

Once you’re set with eyewear, all you have to do is head to the path of totality during the eclipse and look up. Keep an eye out for special programming hosted by museums, libraries, and schools.

If you can’t travel to the path of totality, you might still be able to view a partial eclipse if you look at the sun through your eclipse glasses, the sun will look like it has a chunk taken out of it, but the sky won’t darken quite the same as it will within totality.

Furthermore, the eclipse will likely be live-streamed by observatories across North America, so you can safely and comfortably view the show from your own home.

In addition to total eclipses, there are other sorts of solar eclipses. There are partial solar eclipses, where only a part of the sun is covered, and annular solar eclipses, where the moon is a bit farther away from us in its orbit and consequently appears too small to cover the sun completely. In an annular eclipse, the sun appears in a ring or annulus around the moon thats why this sort of eclipse is also known as a ring eclipse.

There are also hybrid eclipses, which look like a total or an annular eclipse, depending on the location of the observer. Then, of course, there are eclipses of the moon. One or another of these different eclipses is likely to occur in a location near you, within not too long of a time span!

America’s Next Solar Eclipse Comes In 2024

If you missed the solar eclipse on Monday, you won’t need to wait another 99 years to see one.

NASA says the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S. will take place seven years from now, on April 8, 2024. But the next full coast-to-coast eclipse won’t appear until 2045.

During the 2024 eclipse, the moon’s shadow will cross the U.S. border in southern Texas and move up into the eastern half of the country, passing over Dallas-Fort Worth Cleveland, Ohio Buffalo, New York and on to Montreal.

Curiously, it will also cross directly over Carbondale, Illinois, near the spot that experienced the longest stretch of totality during the 2017 eclipse.

Millions of Americans who managed to catch the eclipse Monday saw the sun in the first solar eclipse visible in the U.S. since 1979 and the first to sweep the entire country from coast to coast in nearly a century.

“It’s really, really, really, really awesome,” said 9-year-old Cami Smith as she watched the fully eclipsed sun from a gravel lane near her grandfather’s home at Beverly Beach, Oregon.

The temperature dropped, birds quieted down, crickets chirped and the stars came out in the middle of the day as the line of darkness raced 2,600 miles across the continent in about 90 minutes, bringing forth oohs, aahs, shouts and screams.

He says people who want to see the next eclipse in 2024 ought to make reservations now.

The Next Total Solar Eclipse Visible In North America

While millions of people across the United States experienced a total eclipse Aug. 21, 2017, as the umbra, or moons shadow passed over them, only six people witnessed the umbra from space. The space station crossed the path of the eclipse three times as it orbited above the continental United States at an altitude of 250 miles.

The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Chihuahua

A very tiny portion of the state of Chihuahua sees totality. Almost totally contained with the small De Palomas lakes region, this piece of the state sticks far enough into the path that a determined person could hike the 8 miles or so east from the lakes, and get a respectable 3 full minutes of totality! Do not attempt this unless you are experienced, know what you are doing, and are able to fully accept the physical risks that hiking in this forbidding desert area might bring. The 2024 Total Eclipse Path Through Kentucky

Kentucky gets its share of the path as well not nearly as much as in 2017, but there are a few places you could choose to watch totality from. Besides the Kentucky Bend region we just mentioned . You can choose some towns like Wickliffe , Paducah , Henderson , or Carrsville . is right on the edge of the path, and its airport will get a full minute of totality at 14:02CDT. But if you are in Marion, you really want to be as far northwest as you can get, in order to maximize your time in the shadow.

Thats really it for Kentucky. Owensboro is NOT in the path. Places like Bowling Green, Louisville, Hopkinsville , and Murray are not in the path! Ditto Eddyville and the Land Between the Lakes NOT good places to be, if you want to see totality!

Totality made its short trip through Kentucky in just over 7 minutes, from 13:58:17CDT to 14:05:33CDT.

What To Expect During The Solar Eclipse

The previous solar eclipse in North America occurred in August 2017, but the path of totality for that eclipse did not include any part of New York state. With the 2024 solar eclipse, many New Yorkers will have a great view.

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth. This causes the moons shadow to cross the earths surface. Basically, two shadows are formed during an eclipse by the moon, namely, the penumbra and the umbra. You can view features such as solar prominences and solar flares with the naked eye only when the moon covers the sun, known as totality. Eye damage can result from looking at a solar eclipse with the naked eye.

A solar eclipse occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse. Normally, the two eclipses come hand in hand, but sometimes there can be three during the same eclipse season.
