What Time Is Solar Eclipse

Complete Solar Eclipse Has Five Phases

Watch 2021’s only total solar eclipse in this 1-minute time-lapse

There are five stages in a total solar eclipse:

  • Partial eclipse begins : The Moon becomes visible over the Sun’s disk. It looks like the Moon has taken a bite out of the Sun.
  • Total eclipse begins : The Moon covers the entire disk of the Sun. Observers in the Moon’s umbral path may be able to see the diamond ring effect and Baily’s beads just before totality.
  • Totality and maximum eclipse: The Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun. Only the Sun’s corona is visible. This is the most dramatic stage of a total solar eclipse. At this time, the sky goes dark, temperatures can fall, and birds and animals often go quiet. The midpoint of time of totality is known as the maximum point of the eclipse.
  • Total eclipse ends : The Moon starts moving away, and the Sun reappears. Those fortunate enough to be in the Moon’s umbral can see Baily’s beads and the diamond ring effect just after totality ends.
  • Partial eclipse ends : The eclipse ends as the Moon leaves the Sun’s disk.
  • Types Of Solar Eclipse

There are four types of solar eclipses depending on how the sun, moon and Earth are aligned at the time of the event. A solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.

  • Total solar eclipse: The sun is fully obscured by the moon.
  • Partial solar eclipse: The moon doesn’t fully block the sun so only a portion of the sun is obscured. Here the moon appears to take a “bite” out of the sun.
  • Annular solar eclipse: The moon is centered in front of the sun but doesn’t cover the entirety of the surface . A “ring of fire” shines around the moon.
  • Hybrid solar eclipse: The rarest solar eclipse is a combination of a total and annular eclipse and is produced when the moon’s shadow moves across Earth. These begin as one type of eclipse and transition to another.
  • According to the educational website SpaceEdge Academy , 28% of solar eclipses are total, 35% are partial, 32% are annular and only 5% are hybrid.

Why Is The November Lunar Eclipse So Long

So why is this partial lunar eclipse so lengthy? Its occurring just as the Moon is about to arrive at its apogee the farthest point it gets from Earth in its orbit.

That means its also moving at its slowest speed through its orbit and takes its sweet time passing through our planets shadow.

For comparison, the May lunar eclipse was an hour shorter, lasting five hours and 2 minutes in total, and with the darkest part of Earths shadow passing over the Moon for just two hours and 53 minutes.

The first locations where you can see the partial phase of eclipse where the moon takes a bite out of the sun will happen at 4:12 a.m. EDT local time will vary depending on where you are situated. You can see a partial eclipse if you are living north and east of a line running roughly from Edmonton, Alberta, to Des Moines, Iowa, down through Savannah, Georgia.

The annular eclipse will start being visible in those northerly regions fortunate enough to see it at 5:49 a.m. EDT , according to Time and Date . The maximum eclipse will happen at 6:41 a.m. EDT in the north polar region, where the annular phase will last roughly 3 minutes and 51 seconds.

Annularity will be best visible in Canada, as the path begins on the north shoreline of Lake Superior and is highly visible in the Canadian Shield of northwest Ontario and the Canadian Arctic tundra. Unfortunately, those living in the United States wont be able to see the ring of fire in person because the border to Canada has been closed to non-essential travel due to the pandemic.

The last glimpse of the annular eclipse will happen at 7:33 a.m. EDT , while the partial eclipses last visible location will see it at 9:11 a.m. EDT .

People in the United States will get their chance to see an eclipse next month. A total lunar eclipse, when the moon passes through Earths shadow, will occur from Nov. 7 to Nov. 8 and will be visible from North America, South America and Eastern Asia. This will be the last total lunar eclipse for three years.

The most recent total eclipse in North America, often referred to as The Great American Eclipse, occurred in 2017, and the next one will be in 2024. The next total eclipse in the United Kingdom is not until 2090.

In 2023, there will be two annular eclipses, which occur when the moon, sun and Earth are exactly in line but the moon is too far away to fully cover the sun, creating a bulls-eye effect for observers. The first will be in April and will be visible from northwestern Australia and Indonesia. The second will be in North America next October, and will make a nice prelude to the total eclipse in North America the following year, Dr. Massey said.

Highlights Along The 2024 Path Of Totality

A Great North American Solar Eclipse

Anticipation for the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse will be sky high! Not only are there 32 million people already living within the USA section of the path, but metropolitan areas such as St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Toronto, and Quebec are very close to the path. The major cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., are all within 200 miles of the path of totality. So be prepared for the single-biggest mass travel event in the USA.

    Landfall at Mexico

The first touchdown of the Moons shadow on land is Isla Socorro, 600 km from the Mexican mainland. The total solar eclipse first touches the mainland near Mazatlan, Mexico. Totality here is up to 4 minutes, 20 seconds along the center line. Other large Mexican cities in the path are Torreon and Durango.

    Texas cities

    South central states

After Texas, the Moons shadow crosses Hot Springs and Little Rock, Arkansas. The path comes close to St. Louis, so there will be a massive amount of traffic south to the path. Carbondale, Illinois enjoys its second total solar eclipse just 7 years after the August 21, 2017 eclipse.

    The Midwest

Key cities in the path of total eclipse are Indianapolis, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron. The metropolitan areas close to the path include St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. There will be a mass migration into the path on the early morning of April 8, 2024.

    The Moon Eclipses The Sun

An eclipse of the Sun happens when the New Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, blocking out the Sun’s rays and casting a shadow on parts of Earth.

The Moon’s shadow is not big enough to engulf the entire planet, so the shadow is always limited to a certain area . This area changes during the course of the eclipse because the Moon and Earth are in constant motion: Earth continuously rotates around its axis while it orbits the Sun, and the Moon orbits Earth. This is why solar eclipses seem to travel from one place to another.

A partial solar eclipse or Surya Grahan will be visible over several regions of Europe, the Middle East, north-eastern parts of Africa, western Asia, the North Atlantic Ocean, and the North Indian Ocean on 25 October. Except for the few states of the northeastern region, most of the states in India will be able to witness the solar eclipses.

Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon comes between Sun and Earth and blocks the light of the sun, casting a shadow onto Earth.

    Are Solar Eclipses Dangerous

They can beand this one definitely is. Observers in Chile will need to wear solar eclipse glasses at all times to avoid the threat of blindness. All cameras and telescopes will need solar filters.

The reason its the most dangerous solar eclipse of 2022 is that it will mostly be viewed as the Sun sets, encouraging observers to look at the beautiful sight as it sinks on the horizon. Although its completely safe to look at an eclipsed Sun during the brief totality of a total solar eclipse, that is not whats happening here.

The moons shadow first touches Mexico at Mazatlan. Then it travels northeast through Mexico and enters the United States at Texas, cuts a diagonal all the way across the country to Maine, and then visits the maritime provinces of Canada.

The major cities inside the path are Mazatlan, Torreon, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Montreal.

The ovals in the map show the shadow of the Moon at five minute intervals. This path is called the path of totality.

Ial Solar Eclipse Seen In Uk And Across Europe

On the morning of 25 October the Moon passed over part of the Sun, resulting in a partial solar eclipse.

Eclipse-chasers were treated to one of the astronomical events of the year this morning, 25 October 2022, when a partial solar eclipse was visible from the UK and much of Europe.

During this spectacular event, the Moon covered part of the Sun, its silhouette taking a ‘bite’ out of the solar disc and producing a wonderful partial eclipse effect.

This solar eclipse was visible from much of Europe, as well as north Africa, the Middle East and western Asia.

It was not visible from the US, Canada, south American countries or Australia.

Sonia Turkington captured the below image of the eclipse from North Reddish, Stockport, UK, using a Sky-Watcher 10-inch Dobsonian a Google Pixel smartphone and Seymour 12 solar film.

She says: “This is my first shot with the Sun and a plane. I was trying to focus the Sun to take a photo, then a plane went by, so I just clicked quickly, so its not the best in focus.

“But Im over the moon getting a partial collar eclipse with a plane”

Sonia also captured this second image of the eclipse, this time minus the aeronautical photobomb.

Norman Woolley captured this image of the eclipse using a handheld Canon EOS R6 DSLR camera with RF70-200 lens.

Prabhu S Kutti captured this image of the partial solar eclipse from Abu Dhabi with a ZWO 294MMPro camera, an Espirit 80mm app refractor, Antlia 36mm Red filter and Baader solar filter.

What Will The Partial Solar Eclipse Look Like

At its peak, the Oct.25 solar eclipse will block 82% of the sun as the moon and star will not be perfectly aligned with Earth as they are during a total solar eclipse. That means that at its best, only a sliver of the sun should be visible from “the point of central eclipse.” This prime viewing spot is at the North Pole, so few if any observers will likely see it.

But for observers across Europe and parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia, the sun will appear obscured to varying degrees depending on how close an observer is to the central path of the eclipse. In Russia, for example, about 80% of the sun’s disk will be covered by the moon, while 70% will appear blocked from western China. Norway and Finland see eclipses 63% and 62%, respectively.

As the sun began to rise on Tuesday, the moon wedged itself into Earths orbit to put on a celestial show part of one, anyway.

The partial solar eclipse, visible from Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East and Asia, became visible first in Reykjavik, Iceland, at 8:58 a.m. local time. The shadow will be peak around 4 p.m. in Chelyabinsk in Russias southern Ural region, which is expected to get 79 percent coverage, before waning in New Delhi at 5:30 p.m. with 44 percent coverage.

Images of the eclipse began circulating on social media and in live streams early Tuesday, with photographers posting photos from across the suns path. Though some had to contend with clouds blocking the view, others were able to get clear looks, revealing a full bite out of the sun. At its most striking, it looked like a chubby, orange crescent moon.

Because the moon is smaller than Earth, the moons shadow covers only a small part of Earths surface and is visible only from certain regions.
