How Much Should A 6
The American Academy of Pediatrics and La Leche League recommend the following feeding schedules and amounts for 6-month-olds.
Solids: Offered one or two times per day
Breast milk: Six to eight ounces every four to five hours
Formula: Six to eight ounces every five to six hours
Once your baby hits the 6-month mark and is able to hold their head up unsupported, sit in a high chair, and has doubled their birth weight, it’s OK to start solid foods. For now, a little bit goes a long way! While offering solids, the recommended serving sizes for a 6-month-old are:
- Infant cereal mixed with breast milk or formula: three to five tablespoons
- Fruits: one to two tablespoons
- Vegetables: one to two tablespoons
How Often And At What Times Should I Feed Baby Solids

If baby doesnt seem hungry for solids, is approaching 12 months of age, and otherwise gaining weight and in good health, consider slowly reducing the amount of breast/human milk or formula in each bottle or cutting out a bottle feed. In recent years, guidelines have been updated on when to introduce potential allergens including peanuts, eggs, and shellfish, so unless you have a family history of a food allergy, you can go ahead and introduce them soon after baby starts eating solids. Which Foods Should I Avoid
Foods that are more likely to cause allergies can be among the foods you introduce to your baby. These include peanuts, eggs, cows milk, seafood, nuts, wheat, and soy. Waiting to start these foods does not prevent food allergies. Talk to your doctor if youre concerned about food allergies, especially if any close family members have allergies, food allergies, or allergy-related conditions, like eczema or asthma.
Infants with severe eczema or egg allergies are more likely to have allergies to peanuts. Talk to your doctor about how and when to introduce these foods to your child.
Possible signs of food allergy or allergic reactions include:

You can also use different coloured boards for food types: one each for chopping meats, fruits and vegetables. How To Start Baby Led Weaning
The first time you offer solids is such a fun milestone, so youll be ready once you follow these simple steps.
- Make sure baby has hit the milestones listed above to let you know that hes ready to start.

You may have heard that eating fruits before vegetables can cause a lifelong preference for sweet foods, but there’s no research to back that up. So it’s up to you to determine whether you begin with bananas or carrotsor pureed chicken for that matter.

What Food Textures To Offer At 6 Months

One of the methods is traditional and involves pureeing the food.
In this case we steam the food, we add to it water or oil or milk and either fork mash it or add it to the blender. We are used to this approach.
The other method is to offer steamed and soft foods by hand that is not pureed. This is called Baby led weaning. Of course this is a scary idea for parents. Most parents will think a baby will choke if offered food using this method. It is important to note that babies usually mash the foods with their gums and not their teeth.
The key is that the food is so soft that it can be mashed super easily by our fingers.
Why would I provide food via baby led weaning? Please note if the stalk of the broccoli is not soft, you can cut it off.
Strategies To Use Outside Of Meals For Babys Refusing Solids
There are a few really powerful strategies you can use away from the highchair that will directly impact your baby eating solids during meals. Might seem strange, but if you suspect your baby is refusing because of sensory or coordination difficulties, doing these activities can be total game changers:
- Brush their teeth If you havent started yet, brush their teeth, and when you do, make sure youre getting all over their gums and the sides, as well as the top of their tongue. It only takes a few seconds, but it helps to both desensitize their mouth and improve coordination because the tongue gets practice moving in different directions. If your baby doesnt like it, take it slow, and try often. The more often you brush the bigger the effect. Try for one to three times a day, and consider a vibrating toothbrush for more powerful input in their mouth.
- Play in sensory bins That may be a new term to you or you might be wondering what the heck that has to do with eating, but playing in different textures is super powerful and helps the sensory system understand different textures better.
