How Much Energy Does A 100

A 100-watt panel refers to a solar photovoltaic module that is rated 100 watts. This means that it has a power output of up to 100 watts of DC output under optimal conditions.

Lots of things need to line up for you to achieve the maximum possible output: the panel must be properly installed at the right angle and direction, and crucially, must be receiving peak sun .

Of course, you wont actually get optimal conditions most of the time. To begin with, your panel will receive less-than-peak sunshine for a large part of the day, such as in the morning and late afternoon. At those times, your panel will produce far less than 100 W. Further complicating issues is the fact that the total amount of sunlight varies by location, because of geography and climate. For example, sunny Nevada gets a lot more sun than snowy Vermont!

What this all means is that a 100-watt solar panel will produce different amounts of total power – depending on where you use it.

Luckily, we can access data for the average amount of sunlight received in each state in the U.S. We can use that to calculate the average amount of power a 100-watt solar panel will produce per day in each state.

Weve compiled the results in a graphic below if you want to see how much a 100-watt panel will produce where you live.

Average watt-hours produced by a 100-watt panel per day in each state.

According to a 2017 American Camper Report, 74% of campers use a smartphone while camping. Furthermore, many people who use RVs, trailers, cabins and boats now require off-grid power to stay in touch with their loved ones.

But what happens when you run out of juice?

If youre a camper or adventurer whos looking to keep your devices powered up, a 100 watt solar panel kit may be the answer. Solar panels allow you to power your devices without relying on outlet power, so theyre perfect for true off-the-grid adventurers.

So, which one should you buy?

Here I look at the best 100 watt solar panel kits on the market.

Don’t Miss: What Is The Best Solar System

Can You Power A Home With 100

You could if you wanted to, but it wouldnt make financial sense.

Homes use a lot of energy, and they generally require a solar system sized between 5 kW and 10 kW . To build a system that size using 100-watt solar panels would require networking 50 to 100 of them together.

But there are many reasons why you wouldnt want to do this. Installing so many separate panels means a more complicated installation due to all the extra framing, racking, and fasteners. Furthermore, more panels mean more electrical connections, and hence a less reliable system.

Most crucially, 100-watt solar panels provide you less bang for your buck, i.e. you get less watt per dollar when compared to larger panels.

All of these factors mean that a home solar system built with 100-watt solar panels simply isnt worth it. For this reason, most residential solar systems use larger solar panels, usually rated between 250 W and 400 W.

Windynation Solar Panel Review

Pros: Best power output of all panels tested, good build quality, great value if you buy on WindyNations website

Cons: Biggest and heaviest panel tested, arrived with the least amount of packaging

Review: A solar panels main job is to generate power. In that regard, the WindyNation panel excelled. It output 72.7 watts in my output test, the most of any panel by a slim margin.

Its a well-built panel, and the only one I tested not made in China. According to the label, its made in Canada.

I docked some points for its size and weight. Its the biggest and heaviest panel I tested, over two pounds heavier and 200 square inches bigger than my top pick, the Renogy Mono. If space is limited, its not a good option.

It arrived with minimal packaging and perhaps as a result some minor dents in the frame. The dents didnt affect power output. Im all for reduced packaging, but in this case it was a bit minimal for my taste.

As of this writing, its one of the cheapest 100 watt panels available if you buy through WindyNations website. That makes it a top performing panel at a great value definitely worth a close look.

How Many Batteries Do You Need

If you use a 100 Ah 12V battery, you should be good to go with only one battery.

You may assess your power needs for your solar setup and find that you need a larger battery or two batteries.

Keep in mind that one 100Ah 12V battery will do the job with one 100 watt 12V solar panel. If you get a larger battery or more batteries, you will probably have to expand your solar array too.

Why? While one 100 watt solar panel can charge a 100Ah 12V battery with ease, it may take a very long time to charge larger batteries or more batteries. That is why you would need to expand your solar setup.

Rigid Vs Flexible Solar Panels

All the panels I tested for this review were rigid panels because they are the most popular kind of 100 watt panel. But it is worth comparing them to flexible solar panels.

Rigid solar panels are the industry standard. They have a glass front and a metal frame for protection. They are typically cheaper and heavier. They do not bend.

Flexible solar panels are much less common and typically much more expensive. Theyre made from ultra-thin solar cells placed between a protective layer typically made of plastic. They have no metal frame. They are much lighter and can bend, making them better suited for portable solar builds or curved surfaces.

NEW! 100 Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel, Hub, W/ Harbor Freight Thunderbolt Magnum 100W Solar Kit

Sure, you can use gas generators to power your RV, appliances in a cabin, or other things which require energy. However, generators like this tend to be very expensive. There is also the fact that gas generators create a lot of greenhouse gas emissions and other toxins which nobody should be breathing. Gas generators are also very loud, they can be hard to turn on, and they dont smell nice either.

If you need a quiet, clean, and reliable energy source, a portable solar panel kit is a great way to go. If you are on the hunt for a clean energy provider, the Thunderbolt Magnum Solar 100 Watt Kit is a great option to keep in mind. It has quite a bit of power for all of your needs, it is fairly durable, and its reliable too not to mention easy to operate. This is our Thunderbolt Magnum Solar 100 Watt Review, so lets get right to it and find out what this particular solar panel energy kit is all about.

  • Comes with a battery terminal, 12-volt light system, USB ports, and a DC power adapter

Rich Solar 100 Watt 12v Polycrystalline Solar Panel

You must understand that RICH SOLAR 100 Watt panel is a polycrystalline panel, which will always be inferior to the monocrystalline panels. The only upside is the price these are cheap!

This panel is designed to work well on cloudy days with limited sunlight.

However, some users have found that the output is more like 50-75 watts than 100 watts.

Nonetheless, the 14 pre-drilled mounting holes make it easy to stick this on top of your RV, trailer, or shed and get going.

It doesn’t come with the 4 mounting brackets that’s normally included in systems like this, which is very inconvenient really.

  • Robust tempered glass and anodized aluminum frame

Cons

  • Arrived damaged for some users

Hqst Solar Panel Review

Pros: Cheaper than most 100 watt panels, compact and lightweight for a poly panel

Cons: Performed worst in power output test

Review: The HQST panel holds a special place in my heart because it was the first 100 watt solar panel I ever bought. However, it took last place in my testing.

To start, the build quality is average. It has the standard mounting options and frame thickness. The standard 14 gauge cables, MC4 connectors, and junction box.

In my output test, it generated a max of 68.1 watts, the least of all the panels.

What it lacks in power it makes up for a bit in size and price. Its the smallest and lightest poly panel I tested by a long shot. In fact, its not much bigger than the Newpowa mono panel. Its impressively compact for a poly panel.

And its price is often quite low . If you catch it during a discount, its worth considering. Otherwise Id stick with my recommended picks.

What Will A 100

Daily, a single 100-watt solar panel can power a few small devices reliably provided you factor in a few things. What sort of charge controller you use will be a consideration, as will your battery.

Your limitations will be the capacity of the battery you use, and the energy needs of the devices you may need to run one at a time, or at intervals.

That said, with a single 100-watt panel connected to the proper deep cycle battery, you can run one of the following devices anywhere between a few hours to a full day :

  • Laptops – 60 Wh
  • Certain lamps and lighting – 14 Wh
  • WiFi Router – 6 Wh
  • Smartphone charging – 5 Wh

If youre curious about an appliance thats not listed above, check out Energy.govs Appliance Energy Calculator to find consumption figures. Keep in mind that both their figures, and the ones provided above, are average figures for those appliances youll have to check your own device to check its actual power consumption.

Air conditioners, microwaves, and portable heaters won’t run from a single 100-watt solar panel for these, you’ll need many more panels.

Don’t Miss: What Direction Is Best For Solar Panels

Should You Pair A 100

Yes, that is usually a good idea. Remember, your solar panels produce varying amounts of electricity during the day and none at night.

With home solar systems, this isnt an issue, as you can import and export electricity from the grid as needed. But with a 100 W solar panel, any unused power you produce will go to waste, and youll be left with no power available to use when the sun has gone down.

If youre thinking of getting a lead-acid battery, keep in mind that these shouldnt be run below 50% capacity. That means you should get a solar battery that can store at least twice the daily output of your panels. Assuming an average daily solar production of 300 Wh, you would need a battery that can store 600 Wh.

Newer lithium-ion batteries are different: they can be discharged almost completely. In that case, get a battery with storage thats just a bit higher than your solar panels daily output.

Rockpals 100w Foldable Solar Panel

Rockpals 100W foldable solar panels are specially design for popular solar generators such as Jackery and Goal Zero. Thanks to the various attachments and adaptors for all different generator types.

However, many users claim that they never get close to 100 watts with this thing, so it might not be as efficient as it seems.

You should only consider them if you’re in a tight budget.

  • Stops working in 6-12 months for some users
  • Rarely reaches 100 watts
  • Not compatible with Jackery 440

Devices That Can Run Off A 100 Watt Solar Panel

100-watt solar panels can run many home AC appliances that make your life easier when you are on the go. Here are some electricals that will run with a 100-watt solar panel.

  • WiFi Routers can be powered for a whole day.
  • Cable box and satellite dish.

This will not work for appliances like larger air conditioners, refrigerators, microwaves, hairdryers, electric kettles, and large TV sets. If you want to run these appliances you would have to know how to connect 2 100 watt solar panels or more.

If you want to connect solar panels to expand your setup, you would need a lot of additional equipment solar power mounting brackets, solar panel cables, and fuse holders are just a few.

You would also need to be clued up on what gauge wire for 100-watt solar panels are the most suitable before you can wire your setup.

Watt Solar Panel Wiring Diagram

Harbor Freight 100W Solar Panel Thunderbolt, new in 2021

Theres a few points worth clarifying about this wiring diagram before you get into the detail:

  • The wiring diagram shows only the supply side installation of a 100 watt solar panel system. It goes as far as charging the battery. For the load side detail, check out our post on campervan wiring.
  • It excludes charging the battery from shore power or the alternator.
  • For information on how to fit the battery, see our post on campervan batteries.
  • The diagram also excludes an inverter. You may not need one and even if you do, a 100w solar set up is possibly too small to provide the energy you need for it.
  • The 100 watt solar panel wiring diagram assumes only 1 x 100w panel is being fitted. If you happen to be fitting 2 x 50w panels instead, see our 200 watt solar panel wiring diagram to see how to wire the panels in series.

Monocrystalline Vs Polycrystalline Solar Panels

One of the first things to decide is whether you want to get monocrystalline or polycrystalline solar panels. 100 watt mono and poly panels are rated to output the same amount of power the real differences are in their size, weight and color.

Monocrystalline solar panels use more efficient solar cells so they tend to be smaller and lighter. However, they are often more expensive. Mono panels also have black solar cells.

Polycrystalline solar panels use less efficient solar cells, so to make up for this the panels are often bigger and heavier than monocrystalline panels. They are often cheaper. Poly panels have blue solar cells.

A third type you may read about is thin-film solar panels. These are currently much less common in DIY solar power systems.
