Choose Where Your Model Solar System Will Go
Pick a place to set up your solar system model. This could be across a bedroom wall, along the floor of a hallway or large room, outside in a yard, or down a sidewalk.
Keep your choice in mind as you calculate the size of planets and distances between them in the next steps. You’ll need to have enough materials, and your model will have to fit within the place you choose.
Instructions for building a model out of beads and string, sidewalk chalk, or yard markers are included below, but you can use any materials or any space you like!

Our Place in Space
Artist Oliver Jeffers has unveiled the latest iteration of his massive sculpture, Our Place in Space, a six-mile facsimile of the solar system that stresses just how small we really are.
The work, on view now in Derry, Northern Ireland before it makes stops in Belfast, Cambridge, and North Down in Ireland, is a scenic walkable trail that can be navigated with an accompanying app and soundtrack.
Our Place in Space, previously shown at the High Line Park in New York, highlights that even when massively reduced in size, the solar system still feels very largeand the distances between the planets are far.
The Earth, which stands out decorated with the words Us and Them, is shown as a comment on the fact that were all one human race floating through the universe, the artist said.

As far as we can tell, there are no other sentient lifeforms out there, Jeffers told Artnet News. This the only place that stories have ever been told, as far as we know. So in some ways, this is the center of the universe.
Im trying to point out just how fragile this is, this beautiful accident of life here on this little planet. This is something worth protecting, rather than being taken for granted.

Try different values for Earth to make your scale planets larger or smaller depending on the materials you have available to represent the size of each planet.
Once you’ve done your calculations, go to Step 9 to find out how to make a sidewalk chalk scale model. You can also come up with your own creative display using your choice of materials.

Voyage Scale Model Solar System

The Voyage scale model solar system opened in October, 2001 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Voyage depicts the Sun, the planets, and the distances between them all on the same scale of 1 to 10 billion, giving visitors a real sense of the vastness of our solar system . In this way, visitors get a unique perspective on the beauty and fragility of our home planet, on the challenges and triumphs of space exploration, and on the remarkable fact that our species has managed to learn about other worlds. The models, text, and images that constitute the exhibit are designed to make visitors feel like explorers themselves, so that all humans can share in the great adventure of space exploration.
The Voyage exhibit was developed by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, the Smithsonian Institution, and NASA. It is now managed by the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education.
Major Units Of Instruction:
The major units of this course are Design Implementation Support of solar energy systems. One emphasis would be on neat workmanship installations in accordance, for example, NEC 110.12 and becoming a qualified person in accordance with Article 100 and NEC 690.4. Building The Solar System To Scale In The Nevada Desert
Every single picture of the solar system that we ever encounter is not to scale. If you put the orbits to scale on a piece of paper, the planets become microscopic and you wont be able to see them. There is literally not an image that adequately shows you what it actually looks like from out there. The only way to see a scale model of the solar system is to build one.
And that they did. From filmmakers Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh, who camped for 36 hours on a seven mile stretch of dry lakebed in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, and then traced out the entire solar system based on a blue marble Earth, this is an incredible time-lapse To Scale: The Solar System.

Make A Scale Model Of The Solar System
We have all seen diagrams showing the planets of our Solar System orbiting the Sun. Sometimes their relative sizes are shown, but it is impossible to depict the space between them the orbital distances of each of them from our central star.
Our Solar System is huge and the distances between the planets are difficult to comprehend. A look at the various units required for measuring distance in space reveals just what astronomers are up against!
Using scale models helps us to visualise this.
In this project well show you how to make a model of the Solar System that shows the distances between the planets to scale. It makes for a fun science and astronomy project for kids, both at home and in school.

Options For Creating The Solar System Scale Model
Before you get started with models in the classroom, consider asking your students these questions:
- What makes something a model?
- How are the models used?
- Why are the models used?
Then consider having students create their own scaled models first as a way to predict the size and distance. This will make the impact much greater afterward. After creating models , give images of the solar system and discuss why they are inaccurate models.
These options are in no particular order and you do not have to use just one. In fact, creating multiple models will help students comprehend more.

3.) National Geographic Video. In this video, a group of friends works together to create a scale model in 7 miles of the desert. It really helps provide a visual of the distance between planets and their sizes in comparison to one another. The clip is relatively short and would be a great way to introduce the topic to students.
Scale Model Of Solar System
The solar system is so large that it cant be shown to scale on a standard image. If the planet sizes are shown to scale, then the distances will be too large to fit in the image. On the other hand, if the distances are to scale then the objects will be too small to be visible.

Keeping An Eye On The Sun So You Dont Have To
The Sunspot Astronomy & Visitors Center is once again open daily, 9 AM to 5 PM. The Dunn Solar Telescope observation room is only open on select days. Call the Visitor Center at 575-434-7190 for the current times and tour schedule. The Visitor Center has a museum with exhibits, a gift shop, vending machine, and public restrooms. The center is wheelchair accessible.
Upon check-in, visitors will be provided with a Walking Tour Brochure. This map will guide guests on less than a 1/2 mile loop around the grounds.
The Dunn Solar Telescope is the last operational telescope on the site and is open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to step inside the observing room for an up-close look at the instruments used to study the Sun. IF OBSERVING, guests will be able to watch the sunlight travel through the instruments on the tables and see on the monitors what feature of the Sun is being studied.
A Brief Voyage History
The Voyage exhibit has been a huge undertaking, ultimately involving great efforts by many dozens of people. Indeed, putting Voyage on the National Mall has essentially required going through the same approval process followed by other monuments, such as the forthcoming World War II Memorial. The many people and institutions involved are too numerous to list here, but the efforts of four individuals have been especially critical: Voyage team leader Jeff Goldstein , along with Carolynne Harris Knox , Jodi Schoemer , and Martha Sewall .
My own involvement in Voyage began way back in 1981, at a time when I was teaching astronomy to both elementary school children and college students, and recognized the need for a way to convey the true scale of the cosmos. In 1984, three students from my Honors astronomy class at CUKen Center, Matt Carter, and Ron Bassvolunteered to help me create a model solar system for the Boulder campus. My Ph.D. thesis advisor, Tom Ayres, volunteered to lead the effort through the university bureaucracy and budgeting, and also ended up doing the physical design and blueprints for the model. The five of us worked together to create the Colorado Scale Model Solar System, which was dedicated in May 1987 to the memory of the Challenger astronauts.

The Solar System Scale Model
While driving through the town of Cloudcroft, and along NM Route 6563, you may have noticed blue highway signs bearing the names of the planets. Those signs represent a scale model of the solar system. The concept is similar to a map the distance from downtown Cloudcroft to the Visitors Center in Sunspot is scaled to correspond to the distance between the Sun and the dwarf planet Pluto. The other planets are placed along that route to scale with their distance from the Sun. Look for them all as you make your way to Sunspot! It may surprise you just how close the Earth is to the Sun on this scale!
Given that it takes approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds for light from the Sun to travel to Earth, the speed of light on this scale is only 3.24 mph or about 4.75 feet per second. Driving at 35 mph on NM Route 6563, to scale, you are moving approximately ten times faster than the speed of light Space is Big!
Making Your Solar System Model To Scale
As the distances between the Solar System planets are so big, its almost impossible to have both accurate planet sizes and distances in one scale model.
If we scaled the distances based on the Suns size we used in this model, Neptune would be half a kilometre away!
This is not something you can squeeze into most gardens.
For this project, we are creating a model that shows the distances at a scale that can fit into a garden or park.
The radius of our Solar System has been scaled down to 10m. If our Sun and planets were at the same scale, the Sun would have a diameter of 3cm, but Mercury would be a microscopic 0.1mm, Earth 0.2mm and the largest planet Jupiter just 3mm.
Obviously we cant replicate that for our model. Instead, well be using polystyrene balls of different sizes to show that the planets vary in diameter, but they arent at any specific scale relative to each other or to the distances.
We opted for:
- Venus, Earth and Mars at 3cm
- Saturn, Uranus and Neptune at 4.5cm
Well place our planets in a straight line, but they would really extend out by 10m in all directions from our star.
The distance between the Sun and the Earth is 150,000,000km this is 1 Astronomical Unit .
To make the maths simple when calculating the distances for our model, begin by working with a scale of 1 AU to 1 metre.
With Neptune at 30 AU, it means the model would be 30m, which is still larger than most gardens. Indeed, we only had 10m to work with.
