First, you need to know how much energy you use in a day. There are a couple of ways you can do this. The first involves math. Estimate how much power youll consume while boondocking in your RV by learning what each device or appliance you want to use consumes and multiplying that by the number of hours youll use that device or appliance.

Heres an example: You have one television that consumes 90 Watts. You estimate that youll watch television for approximately two hours per day. So 90W x 2h = 180 Watt/Hours per day

You can do the same for every appliance or device you may want to power as you boondock, and you would add the total of Watt-hours consumed. From there, you can estimate how many panels you need.

Finally, we have created a formula that you can use to determine the number of solar panels your RV need.

Dont let this bit of mathematics scare you off, I promise it is very easy to grasp once you get used to the different metrics used.

Okay, so to figure out how many solar panels your RV will need we will use the formula above.

Monthly electric usage ÷ monthly peak sun hours x 1000 ÷ solar panel power rating.

Lets start with an example.

You plan on driving your RV across Arizona. This state experiences on average 5.7 peak sun hours daily or 176,7 monthly.

So, lets apply the formula.

First, you need to convert your electricity consumption from Wh to kWh, so 4,848Wh = 4.8kWh.

4.8kWh x 31 days = 148,8kWh monthly.

148,8 ÷ 176,7 = 0,842 x 1000 = 842 watts.

842 ÷ 200 = 4,21

Using our formula you can see that an RV driving through Arizona with 4,8kWh monthly electricity consumption will require x4,21 solar panels to offset all their energy usage. Now of course there are no half panels, so we would recommend rounding 4,21 to 5.

Can I Run My Rv Air Conditioning On Solar Power

Yes and no.

You’ll need an inverter powerful enough to run the AC unit, plus batteries to keep it running and solar panels to recharge the batteries.

Our Victron MultiPlus 12/3000 inverter can happily run the 13.5k AC unit in our RV, which pulls about 1300W when running. Our 300Ah of Battle Born Lithium batteries are enough to keep the AC running for about 2 hours. But with just 800W of total solar , it’s a losing battle – the batteries will drain faster than the solar will recharge them.

We rarely run our AC while off-grid, but sometimes we run it for 20-30 minutes just before bed to cool things off if it’s really hot in the RV.

That said, we know plenty of people with big solar arrays who can happily run their AC unit from solar alone. You should typically plan on having a bare minimum of at least 1500W of solar if this is something you want to do.

If you have a smaller inverter , you may need to install an EasyStart on your AC unit to reduce the Locked Rotor Amps that create a huge power draw when you first turn it on.
