Microinverters Cost More Than Other Inverters

Microinverters are relatively expensive. They need to be affixed to the back of every single solar panel. They typically cost $1,000 or more than a string inverter on a standard 5kW residential solar installation.

Unless using a panel integrated microinverter such as the LG model mentioned above, installer labor hours are going to make up the majority of the installation cost difference between using a string inverter or microinverters. That amount can vary quite a bit depending on the installer you use, and how challenging your roof is to work on.

How To Choose The Best Micro Inverters For Your Solar System

As you browse micro inverters, a few key characteristics can help you narrow down your options:

  • Efficiency level: Micro inverters have varying levels of efficiency, just like your solar panels. The efficiency level measures how much energy is lost during the DC to AC conversion . The less lost energy, the better. High-efficiency micro inverters generally contribute to improved system efficiencies, which boosts your solar production and maximizes the return on investment.
  • Size: There are different wattage sizes of micro inverters, each one intended to be paired with the specific wattage of the panels in the system.
  • Price: Determining how much a micro inverter costs depends on various features. Remember that even though a micro inverter is usually a more significant up-front investment, the increased efficiency can pay off in the long run.

What Is A Solar Inverter

Solar energy doesnt provide electricity in a format that your table lamp could be powered by. Inverters change the power produced by your solar panels into something you can actually use.

Think of it as a currency exchange for your power. You might have a fistful of yen, but until you stop and exchange it for USD, you cant pay for lunch stateside.

Your home is wired to conduct alternating current power. The electricity produced by solar panels is initially a direct current . Inverters change the raw DC power into AC power so your lamp can use it to light up the room.

Inverters are incredibly important pieces of equipment in a rooftop solar system. There are three options available: string inverters, microinverters, and power optimizers.

Mounting And Wiring The Microinverters

Solar

Since the microinverters are mounted underneath the panels, they need to be fastened to the rails before the panels are placed. Using the previously worked-out layout, bolt the inverters to the rails with the supplied captive bolts. Mine had washers with oxide-piercing sharps, designed to make a good ground connection between the inverter body and the aluminium rails. There are similar sharps on the panel clamps, to make a connection to the panel frames. Since the inverter connectors are only waterproof when assembled, I placed plastic bags over the inverters in case of rain.

Connect the 240V daisy-chain cable to the inverters and secure with cable ties. Also run a grounding wire to the rails. My kit included grounding lugs with sharps for the purpose.

When To Use Microinverters

There are many reasons to consider installing microinverters. For one, they allow for individual panel performance monitoring. With microinverters, you can compare how each panel is performing on its own, rather than solely evaluating the performance of the system alone. This can mean quicker servicing of equipment, as its easier to identify if a particular panel or microinverter is failing.

Microinverters are also a good solution for more complicated installations that have panels facing different directions or are tilted at varying angles. If you have some panels facing east and others facing south, using microinverters on each panel will allow them to perform to their maximum ability when sunlight hits them, as they will be not impacted by the production issues other panels in the system might experience.

Microinverters are typically more expensive than other inverter options. The additional upfront cost can be well worth it for the added monitoring and production benefits. If you have an easy installation on a single roof plane facing south with no shade, a lower-cost string inverter system can be an effective solution.

String Inverters Vs Microinverters

Solar Inverter Systems Made Simple: Part 1

The biggest difference between string and microinverters is that when using a string inverter to wire your panels, depending on the size of your solar system, you only need to use one or two string inverters . This makes troubleshooting easier if your system fails, as all 6-12 panels that the inverter supports are wired to just one destination. Given the minimal wiring requirements, string inverters are also cheaper to install and maintain than microinverters. That being said, the simplified wiring scheme can also make it more expensive to expand your solar system in the future, and also means that underperforming solar panels will affect the whole circuit, rather than just its individual output.

Other Advantages Of Micro Inverters

  • No single point of failure

  • Not limited by string voltages

  • Easily expanded with different or newer panels

Micro inverter systems also have no single point of failure, which is particularly important in a large system with many panels. This means that unlike with string inverter systems, if one panel or micro inverter has a serious fault the rest of the system is unaffected and it doesn’t result in complete loss of generation.

So What Is A Solar Panel Micro Inverter Anyway

To understand how a micro inverter works, it helps to understand its role in solar energy production.

In short, the solar cells in your solar panels capture energy from the sun and convert it into Direct Current energy. Most homes use Alternating Current energy, so you need a way to convert the solar power to household power in an instant. Enter, the micro inverter.

A micro inverter converts DC power to AC power with tremendous efficiency. Thats because micro inverters connect directly to the back of each solar panel. They are independent from the other solar panels which means more efficient power production.

Power Optimizers Vs Microinverters

Mono

Power optimizers, unlike micro and string inverters, dont convert direct currents to alternate currents immediately, instead they condition it and send it to a centralized inverter. These module-level power electronics, or MLPEs, are very similar to microinverters because they can monitor individual solar panel performance, and allow for flexibility in building a solar system on a marginally shaded roof.

What Is An Inverter Optimizer

An inverter optimizer is a device used to regulate the power flow in an electrical system. It is used to maintain the voltage and frequency of the power supply. The inverter optimizer can be used in various applications such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and other renewable energy sources.

Solar Inverter Optimizers are devices attached to solar panels to increase their efficiency. They work by tracking the sun and adjusting the solar panels position so that it always receives the maximum amount of sunlight.

On the other hand, microinverters are devices that are attached to each individual solar panel. They work by converting the DC power from the solar panel into AC power, then used to power your home.

Most pure sine wave power inverters have limited AC outlets, making them less ideal for people who want to plug in more than two AC-powered appliances. The EDECOA model solves this issue by giving users four AC electrical outlets to run more electronics than many other similar pure sine wave inverters.

The four AC outlets are not the only things that surprised me about this product. To specify, EDECOA power output is also more impressive than the Euthtion, delivering an extra 500 watts to the Euthtions 3,000-watt capacity and 1,000 watts to the latters peak 6000W output.

Running refrigerators, CPAP machines, power tools, microwaves, compressors, and other power-hungry appliances is a cinch with this inverters exceptional power conversion from an ordinary 12-volt battery.

Although I miss the Euthtions wireless remote operation, this pure sine wave inverters wired controller is convenient enough to operate. The products remote controller comes with a 6.6-feet cable to let users operate the inverter without crouching down.

In terms of safety, the EDECOA sine power inverter shines again. I will not worry about short circuits, excessive voltage, insufficient low voltage, overloading, overheating, and reverse polarity.

Ease Of System Expansion

Imagine you installed a 3 kW solar system with a 3 kW string inverter. If your energy needs increase and you want to add another 1 kW of panels, it is difficult to expand your inverter capability.

In the case of microinverters, however, you can easily add solar panels without worrying about the compatibility of other components.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using A Pure Sine Wave Inverter

Easy DIY Solar Panel Install – 8.37kW Enphase Energy Micro Inverters & Mission Solar Panels

Just as you might have read in many best 1500 watt pure sine wave inverter reviews, people are talking about the pros and cons of using a pure sine wave inverter. Here are some of the things you need to know.

The output voltage possesses low harmonic distortion with a pure sine wave. It can also deliver clean and smooth power. The inverter can run motors cooler and faster, too. More so, this device can help in the proper function of inductive loads, such as a microwave oven.

The output is also useful and stable, making this device the chosen one by many people. Also, this device can help in reducing audible and electrical noise that a modified sine wave is producing in fans and TVs, for instance.

Nevertheless, these are only some of the advantages of using a pure sine wave inverter that you need to know if youre interested in using it for yourself.

Downsides

This device can also have some disadvantages. One of those is that theyre pricier than other types of inverters are. But if you would do the math, their long-term benefits cannot be discounted.

On the other hand, some people might find it hard to install it if using for the first time. Nevertheless, the most trusted ones come with a detailed manual on how to install and start using it.

What Are Microinverters

Microinverters are a recent addition to the solar panel market, and rising in popularity over the industry standard string inverter. In 2013 alone, over half of U.S. solar installations used microinverters.

Microinverters are a type of inverter that can be attached to or on individual solar panels behind the railing at the array area string inverters are typically connected to a wall away from the array area. Because the microinverter is joined to an individual solar panel, the panel can function independently to convert DC power to AC instantly.
