Assuming you are in Florida, the global horizontal irradiation is 5.079. So during peak hours, a 300 solar panel will generate 1.52kWh/day.

To get how many solar panels you need, divide your estimated power need by this figure 1.52kWh/day.

Then multiply what you get by 300 for total solar production in a day.

Australia is in the southern hemisphere, meaning optimal solar power is achieved when panels face north. Different states, however, have varied solar outputs.

The tabulation shows how much solar output your panels may produce daily in Australia. With total power consumption, you can use this to get the number of solar panels for your tiny home.

Other factors in solar production are battery amperage, the panels’ and batteries’ series or parallel connection, and inverter size.

Mounting Solar Panels On A Tiny House Roof

Many people want solar panels on the roof of their tiny house, but I opted for a ground mounted solar array, which I highly recommend. Tiny house roofs only have around 200 square feet of space and since most roofs are pitched, you can really only mount panels on one side. This means you only have around 100 square feet of space for panels.

What I did was mount my solar panels on stands on the ground. After considering all the options: roof mounted, pole mounted, solar trackers, and fixed ground mount, Im really happy with my decision.

The benefits of a ground mounted array are huge: being able to easily clean my panels, clear off snow that covers my panels after a snow fall, keeping the panels cooler and being able to shade my house while placing the panels in an open field.

The biggest benefit of ground mounting my panels is that I could have a way bigger solar panel array. This meant instead of 600 watts on the roof of my tiny house, I could put 4,000 watts on the ground in the field right next to my tiny house.

Solar Panel Mounting Options For Your Tiny House

You have a variety of options for mounting your panels:

  • Ground mounting

When possible, you may want to use racks that allow panels to swivel. That way, as the sun crosses the sky, you can angle the panels to pick up more power.

While roof mounting can be a great option in some situations, you should think seriously about racks on the ground. They keep your solar panels readily accessible for cleaning or maintenance.

Roof mounting also confines you to the limited space your roof has to offer, whereas with ground mounting, you can use more panels and generate more power.

Plus, it tends to be cooler close to the ground, which is conducive for solar panel efficiency.

How Many Batteries Will I Need

Temporary Power Connections 50 Amp Plug

This is my preferred method and how I power my tiny house. I use a 50-amp plug from an RV supply store for about $30, plus an extension cord that I assembled myself by purchasing the ends and wire. The wire for a 50-amp drop cord is pretty pricey $3 a foot if pre-made or $1.50 per foot if you do it yourself.

Essentially, this is just a giant outlet that pumps a lot of power through it. Ive found with my local code enforcement that if I use this approach, it being temporary is a critical factor in being legal.

If my tiny house was hard wired, that would open up a huge can of worms legally speaking. Being that it is temporary by nature of the plug, building inspectors instantly lost interest, which is exactly what I wanted.The other benefit of this approach is that you can roll into almost any RV park and plug in, which makes this a win-win in my book.

Using A Backup Generator

The other component of this system is the generator which I used for the first two years and then opted to upgrade my system because they were such a pain to use. In the winter months, I sometimes needed to top off my batteries every now and then, basically when its been really cold and very cloudy for a week or more.

I had a Honda EB2000i already which I really like. Its very quiet and small. The one downside to the Honda is that it only does 1600 watts and only 120V and I needed more power and 240V. To charge my batteries, I had to have 240 Volts, which lead me to get another generator, a 5500 watt 240 volt Generac for $650. This generator proved to be a major headache and lead me to upgrade my system just to not have to use it anymore.

How Much Electricity Do You Want To Generate

In general, tiny houses use much less electricity than the average home. However, every tiny house is different, and how much electricity you use to power your tiny home will depend on its size, how many people live in it, the appliances you use, and more. To maximize your savings, youll want to aim to generate as much of your overall electricity needs as possible. This may mean only installing five solar panels or installing 15 of them.

Breakers Fuses And Disconnects

This one will be highly subjective to your design and how much additional protection you want to build in.

However, there are a few components that you should always use to protect your investment. These include:

  • Low Voltage Disconnect
  • Disconnect Switches

In-line fuses should go between the solar panels and the charge controller, the charge controller and the batteries, and the batteries and the inverter.

These allow you to protect the different components of your system from a short or overload that takes out one part of the system.

The fuse you place in them will vary based on the size of your solar system and how much power each line is carrying.

The disconnect switches should go in the same places so you have the option to totally power down the system for maintenance.

Make sure you follow the proper shut down sequencing.

Start by disconnecting the solar panels from the charge controller, then the batteries from the inverter, and then the charge controller from the batteries.

The low voltage disconnect goes between the inverter and the batteries. It prevents the inverter from over-discharging the batteries if you go too long without sun.

All of these systems should be connected on the positive cable.

There’s More To Solar Power Than Most People Think

When most people think about solar energy, they think of the inverter. But there’s a lot more to it than that. You’ll also need a charge controller, battery cables, and so on.

You’ll also need to really know what you’re doing to put everything together. Using Chris and Malissa as an example again, they got a lot of help from both businesses and people they knew.

Chris’ father used to be an electrician’s apprentice, and so helped them with the wiring. And their landowner is an electrician, so he walked them through things too.
