Selling Solar Power To Generate Income

Storing Solar Energy: Use Stored Power Whenever You Need It

Energy Broker Opportunity: Sell Solar Electricity and Earn Residual Income

If you stay connected to the grid, as usually recommended, you have the local power lines as a backup energy method. Youll generate energy through your solar panels and use that first, and then if you need more for example, when running several high-drain devices together youll automatically tap into the grid.

However, if you go off-grid for complete energy independence, you wont have the local grid as a backup. Either a battery bank or another power generation method, like a wind turbine system, will be necessary to keep your power supply constant.

Batteries technology is improving, but there are a few things that battery users must be aware of:

  • Safety. Depending on the type, batteries can emit harmful gases and pose health risks. Solar battery users should follow the manufacturers safety guidelines for ventilation and maintenance.
  • Capacity. The right battery will be able to store several days worth of power when your panels arent gathering solar energy. You should also be sure to get a deep-cycle battery, which withstands damage when drained beyond 50%.
  • All in all, storing solar power is a great way to preserve the free energy you generate from the sun, so you can tap into your own reserves when needed without paying extra.

Sell Your Electricity Back To The Grid

Sure, we know that electricity is technically a quantifiable resource. But its a bit hard to conceptualize processes like buying and selling it because, well, we just cant see it. Renewable energy certificates, or RECs, help to bridge that gap. RECs are certificates issued by the government establishing ownership of renewable energy. One REC is issued for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours of energy funneled back into the grid.

PURPA requires that utilities purchase a certain amount of their electricity from renewable sources. RECs essentially serve as proof that theyve fulfilled this obligation. So although RECs wont charge your laptop or keep the lights on in your apartment, they allow renewable electricity producers to profit while giving traditional producers an easy way to go green vicariously.

So how much money can you make selling electricity back to the grid? Since rates vary with the market value of electricity, theres no set dollar figure that you can expect to take home. However, many home producers make around $3,000 per year from a combination of REC sales and governmental clean energy incentives.

Sounds great, right? But before you commit to an investment in renewable energy, make sure you have the full story. Here are a few things you should ask your electric company before getting started:

Check With Your State And Utility Company For Eligibility

Over 40 states allow for some kind of net metering. Translation: households that generate electricity through residential solar projects can receive checks from the power companies for excess energy sent to the grid.

Heres how it works: while youre off at work during the day, the solar panels on your home generate electricity that gets stored on the grid as credits. You draw down those credits when you come home and turn on the lights, but if over time you generate more credits than you use, you can sell the credits to the power company.

The rules and rates for selling electricity to the grid vary from state to state, as well as by utility company. Some make it easier than others, and there are caps on how much each household can sell via net metering, to prevent people from fleecing the utility companies.

Recently, theres even been a push to make it harder for folks who generate renewable energy to sell it back to the grid. Opponents of net metering argue that people who generate their own electricity should pay the utility company for the privilege of using the grid. Its another reason to take advantage of the money-earning possibilities of net metering while you can.

What We Know About The Export Payment So Far

The export payment was scheduled to start in July 2021. However, it has been delayed until H2 2021. As of October 2021, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities is running a consultation on the details of the scheme. A final decision is expected in November, following legislation from the government.

Homeowners, businesses, farmers, and non-profits will all be able to participate. The plan is for the scheme to have two parts:

Solar Panels and Systems: When Do They Pay For Themselves

Looking at the table above, lets consider a fairly standard home solar panel set-up of 20 solar panels. If these are very run-of-the-mill panels that average 170 watts 350 watts, then the total power for these panels are 3.4 kW to 7.0 kW. Previously we had calculated that this type of system is able to generate 8,800 kWh per year. Lets consider how much income you can make under different scenarios.

    Feed-in Tariff Rate
    $1320.00

You might wonder what happens if I just sell all my solar electricity? Does it mean that I have to buy electricity from the grid and therefore the income cancels the cost, perhaps all of it? The answer is possibly regionally dependent. But from what weve seen, the feed-in tariffs are on top of net metering benefits. So in the end you use net metering to bring electricity costs to nothing, and with Feed-in Tariffs, youd get an additional amount over it if you send it back to the grid.

How Much Do Landowners Get Paid For Solar Panels

A very simple option for a landowner is to simply lease the land to the solar farm operator. The amount earned per acre varies a lot, due to a number of reasons:

    • Are there any government or other incentives in the State?
    • Level of land prices in the area
    • How far is the nearest grid connection?
    • Is there a demand for solar power in your State?

A landowner can expect to earn revenue of about $2300 per acre of land leased to solar farm operators. Depending on the estimates of solar power generated in that location, solar farm profit compares very well with other farm-based business.

The Size Of Your Solar Panel System

The size of a photovoltaic system is an important factor to consider when determining how much electricity it will produce and how much income it can generate. The larger the system, the more electricity it will produce. This is because larger systems have more solar panels, which can capture more sunlight and convert it into electricity.

In addition, larger systems will generate more income because they can sell their excess electricity to the grid at a higher rate. Therefore, if you are looking to generate a significant amount of income from your solar photovoltaic system, it is important to choose a system that is large enough to meet your needs.

Above we gave an example of a 20 panel system.

How Much Money Does 1 Acre Of Solar Panels Make Per Year Solar Farm Profit

Based on my previous calculation 1 acre of land would produce in Nevada about 351.3mWh of enegy per year. So how much money is this amount of electrical power worth?

Compared to a domestic solar installation, this is a huge amount of energy and it isnt sold back to the utility companies as it is with home solar. Solar farm output is traded by mWh price in specialized markets, so revenue can fluctuate a little.

The average price per mWh is around $27/mWh, so 531mWh from a 1 acre solar farm would be worth $14337.

Understand The Capital And Operating Costs

How to make $100,000 your first year selling solar | James The Solar Energy Expert

Solar farm costs are one of the biggest boundaries toward further adoption. What is the cost of a solar farm per acre? Usually, the capital cost is $0.82-0.95 per watt for utility farms.

Consider the aforementioned value of 285.71 MWh/year for one acre. This amount is equivalent to:

    285.71 MW-hyr*1365 yrday*124 dayh=0.03262 MW=32.62 kW=32,620 W

At this rate, you will pay between $26,748.40 and $30,989 for solar panels per acre. You will also need to pay for the other components, such as racking equipment, inverters, batteries, transformers, and wiring.

Overall, you are likely to pay $400,000-$500,000 per 1 acre solar farm.

For the most part, solar farms do not require much maintenance. On average, you will need to pay between $15-$25/kW/yr.

For one acre, that amounts to about $489.30-$815.50 annually.

Potential Gains And Profitability Of Solar Farms

Here we will look at existing plants to determine the approximate solar farm income per acre.

Pavagada Solar Park is the largest solar farm in the world, with a 13,000-acre area. It produces about 2,050 MW each year. The companies it sells to save $1.7 million per hour or about $7.4 billion a year from a 12-hour day.

Many farmers in the United Kingdom have begun converting their infertile soil into solar farms. While the UK is not known for its sunny weather, plenty of people have profited from selling solar electricity.

For instance, Mandy Wilson has a 30-acre solar farm. She earns about £30,000 each year on rent from the panels.

Your solar farm profit per acre will vary based on the size and efficiency of your array. How much money does a solar farm make? On average, you might profit around $21,250-$42,500 per acre.

Other potential gains from operating a solar farm include:

    • Guaranteed steady income from a solar land lease throughout the term, which is usually 20-25 years
    • Benefitting residents with new tax revenue because the local government can direct the funds to improve community services
    • Improved air quality, reduced pollution, and fewer harmful emissions compared to nonrenewable energy

    Selling To The Utility

When a solar-generating company “sells” electricity back to the grid, it is in essence receiving credits, rather than cash. These credits are different from SRECs. Solar technology company Solar World cites a savings of over $223,000 in utility bills over 25 years for a 77.8 kilowatt commercial system in North Carolina. Selling power is particularly advantageous for time-of-use payment structures where utility rates are highest during the day.

Because PV systems produce the most power during the day, producers are able to sell high at that time, extracting additional gains. When the solar installation produces less, at night, it is buying power from the grid at lower rates.

How Net Metering Makes Home Solar Panels A Better Deal

Your utility might pay you for the solar electricity you generate. Here’s what you need to know.

When you put solar panels on your roof, it’s not possible to match up your energy usage with when the sun is shining. Your panels are likely to generate more electricity than you need during the day, just like you’ll still use energy when the sun goes down. Home battery storage offers one solution to this imbalance, allowing you to save energy for use later in the day. Net metering offers another.

Net metering is one of the ways utilities compensate you for energy you produce but don’t use. We’ll get into the details of net metering and a few others below. The compensation scheme available to you can have a significant impact on just how much solar panels save you over their lifetime.

How Much Can You Make Monthly By Selling Solar Energy Back To The Grid

One might think that higher income households might be the leading ...

Depending on your state and how much power your solar panels produce, what you make by selling solar energy back to the grid might vary. But on average, you can make about $50-$700+ per month.

How much you actually get paid is dependent upon factors like how big your system is and what time of day it is producing energy. It’s important that if you are planning on setting up a solar energy system, check with PG& E or another electric company for rates. If they’re high enough where electricity prices are concerned , then PV systems will be very attractive options financially speaking- compared to conventional means of generating power which may not provide as many savings over time.

If you are really concerned about off-grid living, then go for it! But if not then continue to sell your solar energy back to the grid and that will reduce carbon emissions as well as pressure on local utility companies who might otherwise be charging higher prices in order to cover costs.

Leasing Your Land For A Solar Farm

Farm lease rates vary by location but lies somewhere between $500 to $2300 per acre per year. The higher lease prices will be found in states like California, Texas and Nevada.

Assuming land being leased for a solar farm in Nevada at $2300 per acre, then a 10 acre piece of land will bring $23000 profit per year.

    What Is A Srec

The Department of Energy created the Solar Renewable Energy Certificate, also known as the SREC, as an incentive for people to invest in solar power. The DOE pays companies for every ton of carbon pollution that they eliminate through the sale of energy produced from renewable resources. In essence, you can invest in solar energy and become a seller of electricity while still being able to recoup your cost of investment plus something extra through selling SRECs to utility companies. And you’ll never run out your supply either because these certificates can be traded in future years too.

Imagine that you are a homeowner who is thinking about going solar. If you install solar panels which produce 10 kilowatts of power from the sun then there will be a maximum of 10 units of energy which are granted to your account each month, through net metering agreements, based on the system’s energy production capacity. At night during periods when the sun has gone down then your home or business will use electrical components which aren’t supplied by the solar panels and generate electricity in order to supply this usage.

Introduction To Average Income From Solar Panels

What is the average income from solar panels? In this post, we discuss the factors that come into play, and if things work out, the average income from solar panels. There are two ways to view this. First youre getting income because solar provides for electricity and therefore youre no longer paying an electric bill. Second, you could also get income on top because of policies designed to benefit renewable energy producers, even private individual ones.

Although solar panels have been available for a while, they have only recently become a popular means of monetization. Solar panel systems are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners and commercial establishments due to their many advantages. For example schools wire up for solar that generates savings for the district and positively benefits the salaries of teachers, budgets for students etc.

The short answer regarding average income from solar panels is that it depends highly on feed-in tariff rates. For a rate of $0.01 / kWh then a standard 20 panel home solar set up could generate $88.00 per year. At $0.10 / kWh that standard 20 panel solar set up would generate $880.00 per year.

Q2 Why Is My Electric Bill So High When I Have Solar Panels

SRECs – Solar Renewable Energy Credits Explained

Ans. In answer to this question, I can tell you that you may not know but your home can consume even more energy than you thought.

Do you have a central air conditioner, washing machine, heat pump or do you use a dryer frequently? You will have in mind that you are using more of the above equipment if you have a solar panel.

If you are just doing this, your electricity bill will be higher even if you use solar energy in your home.

What Does Selling Solar Power Back To The Utility Company Mean

When people refer to selling energy back to the power company, theyre typically talking about net energy metering, which is an incentive that power companies in most have in place. Net energy metering is an important benefit to going solar because your panels will sometimes generate more energy than your home uses. Instead of going to waste, this electricity will be fed back to the power grid, and youll receive credits from the energy company. These credits will roll over on your energy bill and go toward your energy costs during the times when your solar system is producing less energy than what youre using, reducing the overall cost of your power bill during the times when youre using more power than your panels are producing.

There are some cases where real estate developers or landlords may install solar on a property and make money back by charging renters for using the power the solar system generates, but the average homeowner will not be in this situation.

How Many Solar Panels Fit In One Acre

There is physical room for about 740kW of solar panel surface on one acre, but the panels are mounted in rows with walk spaces allowing for maintenance, so a form factor of 0.58 is applied.

In general, 1kW of solar power can be fitted into 100 square feet. There are 43560 square feet in an acre, so the possible solar power can be found by:

    43560/100x1kw= 435.6kW

Solar farms are installed in locations with high irradiance values, such as Nevada. The Peak-sun-hours value for Nevada is 2348.

Power produced by 1 acre solar depends on location irradiance

Theoretical solar energy generated by 1 acre in one year equals:

    435.6kW x 2348kWh/m2 = 1022mWh

    1022mW x 0.58 = 592.76 megawatt-hours of solar power
