SUNRUN SOLAR |INSTALLED| MUST WATCH|

Sunrun Solar At A Glance

With 15 years of experience, Sunruns growth has made it a leader within the residential solar installation industry. The company has installed over 285,000 solar and battery systems in 20 states. It offers a comprehensive solar installation process, inverter, backup batteries and home energy monitoring as well as ongoing maintenance for customers.

Much of Sunruns business comes from leasing solar panels, though the company does offer customers the option to purchase panels as well. Leasing panels can be a cost-effective way to install solar sooner, but it comes with additional long-term costs and risks. Be sure to understand the terms and conditions, including how and what youre being charged for before leasing.

Customer reviews report poor customer service and slow responses on follow-up maintenance. Many customers complained about system failures and long wait times for repairs. Sunrun suffers from paltry ratings on various consumer trust websites and has received a staggering 1430 complaints via the Better Business Bureau in the 2021 alone.

Customers Say Sunrun Isnt All Bad But Theres Still Room For Improvement

Before we get into Sunrun reviews, sit back while we tell you a little story. Way back in the late 2000s, before rooftop solar was really a thing, Sunrun CEO Lynn Jurich was setting up shop at county fairs and farmers markets, trying to entice homeowners to invest in the then-unheard-of solar lease, a financing type that Sunrun itself pioneered for the solar industry.

Fast forward to today and we see now that the solar lease was a defining moment for the solar industry. It allowed thousands and thousands of homeowners to go solar by avoiding that high initial investment the technology traditionally required. The lease allowed the solar industry to flourish and grow at a singularly rapid pace.

Today, Sunrun is the 2nd biggest residential solar installer in the US, only behind the behemoth SolarCity. They support leases, loans, and direct purchases in cash and work in over 20 states from coast to coast.

While Sunrun was hugely important for the growth of the solar industry, no company can simply rest on their laurels. While Sunrun sees OK reviews from customers, they are still far from perfect.

If youre thinking about going solar with the originator of the solar lease, you need to make sure that theyre the right company for you, especially now that solar leases are falling out of favor as more homeowners like you see the benefits of actually owning their system.

Government Action: BBB reports on known government actions involving business marketplace conduct::Vivint Solar Actions

The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

In December 2020, Vivint Solar, Inc. entered into a settlement agreement to resolve a lawsuit filed by New Mexico Attorney General’s Office in 2018. The original lawsuit claimed Vivint Solar was engaging in unfair and unconscionable business practices including clouding titles to consumers’ homes, fraud and racketeering in connection with its residential solar power purchase agreements and solar equipment. The Office of the Attorney General’s complaint alleges that Vivint Solar binds New Mexico consumers into 20-year contracts that require consumers to purchase the electricity generated by a solar system placed on their homes at rates that increase by over 72% during the 20 years. The complaint further alleges the Vivint Solar deploys door-to-door sales managers to engage in high pressure sales techniques and procedures designed to mislead consumers into believing that these 20-year contracts will save them substantial amounts of money. The complaint also charges Vivint Solar with filing improper notices in consume real estate records that operate to cloud titles, and in some cases making it difficult for New Mexico consumers to sell their homes.

Which Company Is Cheapest Sunrun Or Adt Solar

Sunrun is more affordable and more accessible cost-wise than ADT Solar. This is partially due to the fact that Sunrun installs lower-quality panels than ADT Solar. Sunrun installs the following brands:

These are all top-tier brands, but they arent quite as impressive as the LG and Panasonic offerings from ADT Solar, which are considered some of the best solar panel brands.

Sunrun also accepts cash purchases and loans as well as more affordable options like leases and PPAs. ADT Solar only accepts cash and finance deals.

Customer Experience: Sunrun Vs Adt Solar

Sunrun customers unhappy with solar panels

Customer service and overall experience can vary wildly among installers. Generally speaking, smaller local companies provide superior customer service. They can also typically provide more help taking advantage of solar incentives like the federal tax credit and offer more system customization options.

As large national solar panel installers, both Sunrun and ADT Solar have had and continue to experience issues with customer service. Well discuss how customers view both companies in the sections below.

What Customers Say About Sunrun

Unfortunately, Sunrun has a long history of poor customer service, and it doesnt help that its largest acquisition Vivint Solar had many dissatisfied customers due mostly to poor experiences with the third-party installers Vivint used.

Many of Sunruns negative reviews mention aggressive and sometimes misleading sales tactics. There have also been issues with communication, particularly after installations are completed and issues crop up.

Some customers are pleased with Sunruns work and service, so your experience seems to depend heavily on the installer you get and the project manager assigned to your file.

Below are some reviews of Sunrun from customers online:

First sales guy lied and made false promises. They sent a second sales guy who was more forthcoming. The contract and installation process was very smooth while working with him. Then I got a roof leak at the very first rain due to the installation being done incorrectly. Panels only worked properly for 1 month before the inverter stopped working. Im very disappointed and angry. Ive been trying to contact them to get the inverter replaced for 5 months and get no response at all. Alba M. via Yelp

Sunrun has also gotten some bad press in the past. This video provides a quick look at some of the issues this company has had with poor installation and customer service:

Sunrun Is Essentially A Scam

Sunrun is essentially a scam. Their contracts are absolutely one sided. They tried to charge me $33,900 for a 400-watt solar panel system with company-offered lending at 2.9% interest . If you aren’t familiar with solar, you should know that even if you bought the most expensive, ready to go solar panel generator on the market with the same capacity AND you had it installed by professionals, there is no way on this earth you would be spending more than $4,500. If you bought a 400-watt system from sun run at 33,900 at 2.9% interest you would be paying $47,699.99. Their sales tactics are very shady. They will try to get you overly engaged in planning calls where you get you to watch them calculate the numbers and they talk about your potential savings. If you go with sun-run you can of course go for lease options but your actual savings will be minimal, while they essentially have a stake in your homes deed. Update: They also will try to calculate your power bill and compare it to their internally generated metric to assess how much power you’re going to use, then say something insane like “You will save $107,000 over 25 years”. I asked how the metric was created and the response was basically nonsense”. The sales rep assumed their system would save me 77% on my power bill with only 400 watts. What an absolute crock.

We Bought A House With Sunrun Panels

We bought a house with Sunrun panels already on it. They didn’t provide proper signature so our home purchasing transaction was delayed for 2 week, waiting for the Sunrun signature. After a year of owning the house with Sunrun panels, one of the panels was damaged and needed to be replaced. I talked to a couple of reps and they sent me to this cyber limbo, directing me to contact their rep who never replied. I am still waiting to hear from them regarding this one damaged panel. If, I hear from them, I will update my review. As of 5/7/2021, they keep sending me to their “rep” who does not seem to exist.

When it comes to residential solar panel installation, one company does more business than anyone else. In 2020, Sunrun captured about 13% of the residential solar market, according to Wood Mackenzie, about double the share of its two closest competitors, Titan Solar Power and Freedom Forever. Sunrun’s place atop these market share rankings is thanks in large part to its 2020 acquisition of what was the second largest solar installer, Vivint. With the acquisition, the company has a footprint in 21 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico.

Sunrun offers solar installations in 21 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Below I’ll give you the essential information about Sunrun and, when it’s possible, let you know how it compares to the competition.

Very Disappointed With Sunrun Salesman

Sales person told me that Ther panels would cover all my power usage. I am paying more than before I had the panels installed approximately $1000 to Edison my power company. When I complained was told they could not add more panels because they came in 8 and there was not enough room to add panels. Was told by installer that a couple more panels would probably do the trick and could easily put or 5 more panels. Sales person was definitely not honest about the facts. Was just after a sale.

Sunrun Solar Review: The Bottom Line

Sunrun Solar Customer Review

Not everybody can afford to pay for a residential solar system up-front. Sunrun, being a solar giant, definitely does make solar energy more affordable and therefore more accessible to more homeowners in the US. Sunrun may be a good and practical choice if youâre looking for a quick, practical, and cost-effective way to go solar, as the company provides a variety of customizable payment options. Itâs worth noting, however, that there are concerns over a lack of details and transparency with regards to Sunrun payment options, so itâs best to reach out to a Sunrun representative directly.

Sunrun’s 10-year warranties are also on the shorter end when compared to the 20-25 year warranties that a lot of its competitor companies are offering. If warranties are particularly important to you, as it should, then you can definitely find better warranties elsewhere. In spite of its short coverage period, however, Sunrun does a fairly good job at providing maintenance for its system, along with a unique theft and damage protection for its panels.

Sunrun is one of the most prominent solar companies in the US today. However, its mixed-bag of customer ratings and reviews may be a little worrying, especially if youâre just getting into solar. Itâs likely that your own personal experience as a Sunrun customer will depend greatly on the Sunrun representative in your area.

Are Sunrun Solar Panels A Good Deal

Sunrun provides a lot less public information about pricing compared to Tesla, so it’s a bit harder to nail down an answer here. Given that prices change with location and industry experts suggest getting multiple quotes when you’re shopping for solar panels, including from non-national players, that’s probably OK. Still, we can start to get at that question without a quote in hand.

In November, Sunrun reported an installation cost of $3.93 per watt. The median cost in 2020, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory was $3.80 per watt. Other sources report significantly lower numbers. EnergySage reported average installation costs by state ranged from $2.33 per watt in Arizona to $3.43 in Washington, DC.

“This is not an apples-to-apples comparison,” Wyatt Semanek, a Sunrun spokesperson, said via email. Sunrun’s price per watt includes the cost of batteries with some systems, while the National Renewable Energy Laboratory price does not. One Tesla Powerwall can add $10,000 to the cost of a system, a significant addition. Semanek also noted that geography has a significant influence on price.

Although it’s a different beast than purchasing panels, there are a few things to know about the solar-as-service options that comprise the majority of Sunrun’s business. CNET has looked into power purchase agreements before, and Sunrun’s lease options are a different flavor within the category of third-party ownership.
