What Affects Solar Incentives Cost in Austin
System Size (kW)
Most Austin homes need 6-8 kW to offset 90%+ of usage. Larger homes or EV owners often need 10-14 kW. Cost scales with system size — but $/watt drops with larger systems.
Panel Quality
Premium monocrystalline (SunPower, REC, Panasonic) costs $0.20-0.40/W more but produces 5-15% more energy over 25 years — often better ROI in Austin's conditions.
Inverter Choice
String inverter (cheapest, 12-yr warranty) vs microinverters (Enphase, 25-yr warranty, per-panel monitoring) vs power optimizers (SolarEdge, hybrid).
Roof & Install
Complex roofs (multiple angles, tile, high-pitch) cost more than simple asphalt. Ground mounts add trenching cost.
Texas Incentives
Federal 30% tax credit applies everywhere. State credits, utility rebates, and net-metering rules vary by TX utility.
Battery Storage
Optional add-on. Tesla Powerwall 3: +$10,000-15,000. Enphase IQ Battery: +$8,000-14,000. Provides backup during outages + more self-consumption.
