How Much Does It Cost To Go Solar?

You can calculate the return on investment for installing solar panels by calculating your total payback. Calculate the amount you spent to install a solar panel system and then figure out the amount you will save on energy bills monthly. These two numbers show how quickly your savings will cover your initial costs. Electricity rates will vary by region, being higher in the Northeast than in the Northwest. Solar tends to be more cost effective where electricity prices are high and sunshine is abundant.

Will Solar Impact The Ability To Sell My Home

Not only does owning solar increase the desirability of your home, but it also increases the value of your home.

Real estate studies have found that, by reducing electricity costs, solar energy systems increases a homes value by an average of $17,000. According to the Appraisal Journal, for every $1000 saved in annual energy costs, $20,000 is added to the value of the home. Other home improvements, like kitchen and bathroom renovations and decks, are only worth about 75-100% of the cost, making solar more valuable than other home improvements.

Saving Money On Utility Bills

One of the most popular reasons to go solar is that you can drastically reduce or even completely eliminate your monthly utility bill. The amount youll save depends on how much energy your system produces as well as how much energy you consume. But the most significant benefit is the decrease in your monthly utilities since youre harnessing the power of the sun, a free, inexhaustible energy source.

Youll also avoid hefty electricity rates that are often unpredictable and increase over time. And since the amount youll save with solar power is usually equal to the amount youll avoid paying an electricity supplier, your finances wont be affected by surging energy prices in the area.

When you install a solar panel system, you can lock in your energy costs at a constant rate, making your finances much more predictable.

If Your Firm Goes Bust Payments Won’t Transfer Automatically

If you’re on a feed-in tariff , your payments won’t transfer automatically to a new provider if your current supplier goes bust.

This is different from the smart export guarantee if you’re on a FIT, regulator Ofgem will appoint a new supplier for you, but payments won’t start until your contract starts.

The new company will contact you to confirm your tariff information and it must also confirm whether it’s a FIT licensee. If it’s not, you may need to find another FIT supplier to continue to receive payments.

As above, you’re able to choose a different supplier from the one Ofgem appoints for you if you wish, but it shouldn’t really matter, as your FIT rates won’t change.

Reasons To Talk To Solar Professionals

How Much Does It Cost to Install Solar Power in Your Home?

There are many nation solar wholesalers and smaller local companies who are highly knowledgable about all of the solar components, installation procedures, and subtle details that go into designing a system from scratch. They are also committed to helping do-it-yourselfers like us do the best job possible without breaking the bank.

We ultimately chose a wholesaler called Mr. Solar, for several reasons. Their prices seemed the most reasonable of any companies we checked, and they were able to work with us to design as a system that could meet our needs.

We worked with our rep for over a year before we made our purchase. He was patient with us, occasionally giving us price updates and advice whenever we asked. Hes also been able to give us great assistance in figuring everything out as weve been installing everything and cooperating with our local electrical inspector. Whenever weve had changes to make, hes been super helpful!

Look At Your Current Energy Consumption

Look at your power bills for the previous year. How much power do you use month by month? How do your needs change through the seasons? What kind of climate do you live in?

Our old house ranged anywhere from 650-1150 kWh each month depending on the season. We managed to reduce our energy needs so that we can easily rely on a 1.1 kWh solar system by following these next guidelines.

Like Vitamin D For Your House

To envision how solar power can provide enough juice for an entire house, it’s necessary to cover a bit of the basics. We’ve probably all seen the more traditional solar panels by now flat, glare-inducing, unwieldy looking things that sit on rooftops.

Solar panels capture whatever sunlight is available and convert it to DC power. An inverter converts the DC power to AC power . For people who want to completely power an entire home with the sun’s rays, there are systems available to convert and store extra power in the form of battery energy. This way, the house still can have a source of power at night or in poor weather .

Solar shingles are also a subtle, streamlined alternative to the older, bigger panels. They are made from the same materials as traditional solar panels, act as traditional roof shingles and look pretty much like a regular roof … perhaps just a bit shinier. Contrary to popular belief, the newer panels can work even in weak or scattered sunshine conditions.

The smart consumer calculates electricity use, then assembles a solar panel setup that can meet that demand. If the setup seems like too much, cutting back on consumption might be in order.

General guidelines recommend a setup that generates 1 kilowatt per 1,000 square feet of house. But don’t let your optimism take over you need to ensure you can produce enough power to get you through the worst times, not the best. You’ll want to literally prepare for the proverbial rainy day.

Sunpower Monocrystalline Solar Panels

The cost of installing 10 SunPower monocrystalline solar panels averages $8,250 to $13,200. This includes all necessary components and labor. SunPower makes several monocrystalline panels, including flexible panels that are thinner. These can be installed in different places that traditional monocrystalline panels cannot. SunPower has high-efficiency ratings and different styles that can fit various installations.

Additional Solar Panel System Costs

Sunrun: How much does going solar cost

There are a few things youll want to add to your solar energy systems total cost to get the most accurate price estimate. Here are a few additional factors that will impact how much your solar panels will cost:

  • Labor costs Local labor costs for solar installation will change depending on your area and the average costs solar installers charge in your area.
  • Installing solar mounts The costs to install the racks that hold your residential solar panels will effect cost as well. There are a few options for solar mounting.
  • Installing solar inverters A solar inverter will need to be installed to transform direct current power from the panels into the alternating current you can use in your home
  • Other costs: There may also be costs for any local permit fees, inspection fees, and taxes on the solar panels.

With the fall in solar panel prices, these soft solar panel costs now constitute the bulk of what you pay when you install solar for your home.

Fortunately, as more people adopt solar power, soft costs have fallen as a resulta trend thats very likely to continue in the future. An analysis by the federal governments National Renewable Energy Laboratory discovered that installed prices have fallen at an average annual rate of 13% to 18%.

Always make sure to speak with a local solar professional to get a more accurate estimate of what your installation will cost.

How Much Does A Single Solar Panel Cost

If youre looking to buy your own solar panels and install them yourself, you can expect to pay somewhere between $200 and $250 per solar panel. That doesnt include other costs, like inverters, wiring, and installation, which is why the cost of a full solar panel system installation seems much higher.

How Much Do Solar Cars Cost

As you can see above, there really arent too many options out there for solar cars. Both the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf are offered with solar panels, but thats about it. And furthermore, is it worth it to pay the premium for the solar panels?

To find out, all we need to do is calculate if paying the additional cost for solar panels on the roof is cheaper than continuing to purchase electricity from your utility to power the vehicle. Here we go!

Nissan Leaf

As we mentioned above, Nissan offers a small solar panel as an option for the Leaf. The panel is included as part of the most expensive trim level, so to get the solar panel on your car, itll cost an extra $6,110. This makes for a grand total of $36,790 for the entire car.

At this trim level, you also get leather seats, fog lights, and heated back seats. Honestly, we dont need to even do cost calculations. $6,000 for a 5-watt panel does not make sense financially.

Now, if youre after all the other extra features, by all means go for it! But if youre only interested in the solar panel, save that money and install solar on the roof of your actual house, where $6,000 could buy you a 2,000-watt installation literally 400x bigger than the 5-watt panel on the Leaf! And with solar attached to your roof, you could actually charge your entire vehicle with solar power pretty cool!

2017 Prius Prime

And, thats it. The 180-watt panel needs to cost less than $608 for you to break even at some point .

Saving Money On Utilities

  • Utility bills: Say goodbye to high electricity costs. Going solar can dramatically reduce or even completely eliminate your monthly utility bill.
  • Net metering:Get paid for any excess or unused energy your solar system generates. You can potentially save thousands of dollars in electricity costs over the lifetime of your solar energy system.

Take a look at our solar potential calculator to get an idea of how much energy your panels could generate as well as how much money you could save based on your utility bill.

In Conclusion: Are Solar Panels Worth It

At the end of the day, the cost of solar is only as important as the return youll get from installing solar panels. For most homeowners, solar is a worthwhile investment, and you can break even in as few as 7 or 8 years. From that point on, youre essentially generating free electricity and racking up the savings. During those 7 to 8 years, youll be generating your own electricity instead of paying for electricity from the grid, and any extra electricity you produce you might be able to get credit for thanks to net metering policies .

Of course, just like the cost of solar panels varies by state, your payback period with solar will also vary depending on where you live. As a general rule, places where electricity is most expensive will lead to the most lifetime savings from a solar panel system.
