Forget Single Solar Panelshow Much Energy Will Your Whole System Produce
Knowing how much energy a single solar panel produces is all well and good, but more importantly, how much solar power can your roof generate? Lets do the math below:
Take our example above, where youre getting an average of five hours of direct sunlight per day and using solar panels rated at 290 W. Multiply the five direct sunlight hours we estimated above by 8.7 kW, and we get approximately 43.5 kWh of electricity produced per day. And Finally Lets Do Out The Math
We have our three main assumptions now how do those numbers translate to an estimated number of solar panels for your home? The formula looks like this:
Number of panels = system size / production ratio / panel wattage
Plugging our numbers in from above, we get:
Number of panels = 10,649 kW / 1.3 or 1.6 / 320 W
which gives us between 20 and 25 panels in a solar array, depending on which production ratio we use . 25 panels each at 320 W results in a total system size of 8 kW, which is right around the average for EnergySage shoppers looking for a solar installer. Tada!

Solar Energy Explaining The Basics
Typically, the relevant size of a solar power system is known by its Peak Volume amount. This is the amount of electricity your system is likely to produce on a gloriously sunny day. So, a 5kw system, for example, will produce roughly 5000w at peak sunshine. 1kw equals 1000 watts Got it? Great!
So, if your system was made up of 250w panels you would need 20 x 250w panels in order to collectively generate 5000 watts or 5kw.
So, what can you expect to run with 1kw of power?
Well, believe it or not, 1000w is sufficient to power:

Okay, so it may seem counterintuitive to connect to the very thing youre trying to escape from, but while the grid absorbs any excess energy you dont use in your home it also works in reverse and can be used to top up your electrical needs when youre using more power than your solar panels can output.

The Number Of Cells And Solar Panel Size
As you might already know, the cells are the core of a solar panel.
The number of cells determines the output voltage of the panel, but it will also determine the solar panel size.
The more cells in the panel, the bigger the panel and the higher possible output voltage.
