How Can I Get Solar Panels For Free

Buying Cheap Solar Panels

HOW TO GET UNLIMITED FREE ELECTRICITY OFF THE GRID – HOW TO GET FREE SOLAR PANELS SHTF SELF RELIANT

If you don’t feel like doing all of the work involved in the methods for getting free solar panels listed above, you can opt to buy cheap solar panels from people who did use the above methods to get them and now want to make a small profit from them.

You can find these exceptional offers on websites such as ebay.com or craigslist.com, start a free account and buy as many cheap solar panels as you want.

Although this method involves you dishing out some of your own money, it also eliminates a lot of the hard work of getting free solar power panels. Since these people probably got their solar panels for free, they are usually more than happy to get rid of them for very cheap and you end up getting them for “practically” free.

One of the advantages to this approach, is that unlike free solar panels, the panels you get have usually already been tested and proven to work. You don’t have to end up with 47 useless solar panels in your garage you must now dispose of. Always get a receipt for what you buy, just in case of foul play.

In essence, you are trading a little bit of money for the luxury of having a lot of the leg work done for you. That works for me.

Screcs And Net Metering

Net Metering If by chance you produce more power than you need, in most areas you can sell this excess power back to the power company at the same rate they charge. In effect you are now a power company yourself selling power you dont use, lowering your monthly payments that much lower. SCRECS With SCRECS or Solar Renewable Energy Certificates you can sell the value of having produced power with solar energy. As the push gets higher to move towards renewable energy system power companies are being required to produce power with renewable energy. However instead of setting up their own solar plants and wind farms they are meeting this requirement through the purchase of SCRECS. If you live in an area that has a SCREC market you can make extra money just for having produced energy with solar power even though you used all the energy yourself. Taking all these factors into account it is quite possible to get your own solar panels setup on your roof, not increase your monthly bills and at the same time reduce your electric bill to zero and possibly start making some extra money each month to boot. So is it the same as just having someone give you full set of solar panels no, but all things figured out it really didnt cost you anything other than time. And of course you increased the value of your home as well.

What Makes A Solar Panel Fit For Ground

How Much Can You Earn From The Seg Scheme

Because payment is based on the number of kWh sent back to the grid, the amount you earn will depend on how much surplus energy your system creates. According to data from the Energy Savings Trust an average-size home with a 4kWp solar PV system installed should earn its owner around £94 per year, assuming rates of 5.5p/kWh.

But dont forget, the energy you use also contributes to lowering your energy bills. A typical solar PV system saves around £220 from your energy bill each year. When these two figures are combined an average household should be around £300 a year better off with solar. With a typical system costing £6000 to install, that equates to total payback within around 20 years.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Solar Panels

The main barrier is the length of time you have to wait to see a return on your investment, and the difficulty of calculating it in advance.

Installation can be expensive and the performance of solar panels can be negatively affected by the weather a problem in the UK more than places like the USA and Australia. Not all types of ceilings are suitable, and panels can look ugly and take up a lot of space.

Also, the production of solar panels is not environmentally friendly Friends of the Earth notes that 80% of it is made in China where manufacturing is largely made by coal. It is also expensive and impractical to move it, and this can be a problem if you are likely to be moving from one house to another.

In a major report based on its own consumer complaints, Citizens Advice expressed concern about poor selling and cold calling by rogue solar panel installers. She says many consumers end up signing up for contracts they dont fully understand which makes them worse off than they were when they started.

It calls on the government to provide protection through a net zero-home guarantee.

What Happened To The Feed

The Feed-in Tariff was introduced by the government in 2010 to help increase the use of renewable energy. The scheme was in effect two tariffs, the Generation Tariff which paid a fixed amount for any electricity generated from a renewable source. And the Export Tariff which compensated homeowners for any unused electricity sent back to the grid.

The Feed-in tariff proved to be a huge success. Before 2010, the UK generated just 9.3 gigawatts from solar power. By 2017 that had risen to a massive 38.9 gigawatts, a gain of 319% in just seven years.

Should I Install Solar Panels At Home

Installing solar panels at home seems like an attractive idea. You get free electricity when the sun shines, potentially cutting your energy bills and doing your part to conserve the environment without having to think about it extra.

Experts say reducing the carbon emissions associated with operating and heating our homes, which emit a fifth of carbon dioxide in the UK, is critical if the country is to reach its goal of being net zero by 2050.

And at a time when energy costs are rising and more and more of us want to do our part for the environment, installing solar panels in your home has never looked more attractive. But what are the pros and cons of installing solar panels both environmentally and financially?

Understanding Solar Leases And Solar Ppas

How To Get Free Solar Panels From The Government – Facts vs Myths

The one thing that solar leases and PPAs do is offer consumers a way to get solar without any upfront cost. However, there are other options available, such as financing your system with zero down.

A solar lease will allow the installer to build a system on your property and charge you a monthly fee to lease the equipment from them. This agreement will have you paying a flat monthly fee and will allow you to use 100% of the energy produced by the system.

Power purchasing agreements are somewhat similar, but rather than renting the equipment for a set fee each month, you will be required to buy power from the installer rather than the utility company. You will typically be charged a flat rate per kWh. Therefore, if you happen to use less power then what the system produces, you will be required to pay for the excess electricity is produced, but not to worry this will all be trued up annually between you and the utility company if you live in a Net Metering region.

Now Might Be The Best Time To Get Solar Panels

Why? Because the government is short of money and they desperately want to reduce the amount they pay to homeowners who are installing new solar panels.

Back in the 2015 Budget, the Chancellor George Osborne announced his intention to dramatically reduce the Feed-In Tariff by 87%. Following a backlash from the green lobby and from the solar panel industry, he backed down.

That was good news but, unfortunately, he still cut the rate by 64%. To give you an indication of the size of the drop in the tariff, it was at 12.03p per kWh prior to February 2016 after which it fell to 4.07p per kWh.

The 4.07p figure is important because it still allowed homeowners signing up to install a new solar panel system to be able to make their money back and a little bit more over time in the vast majority of cases.

Can I Make Money From The Energy My Solar Panels Generate

If you have a solar PV system and it generates more energy than you need, the surplus will go back to the national power grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee , launched in January 2020, electricity suppliers are offering payment for every unit of energy you export to the grid. The previous feed-in tariff scheme was much more generous, but closed to new customers at the end of March 2019.

If you sell electricity back to the national grid, you can select the best available SEG tariff, separate from any contract you have with a power supplier that powers your home.

SEG definitions can be fixed or variable. The SEG flat tariff will pay a specific price per kilowatt-hour of electricity exported for the duration of the contract. SEGs variable tariff will change the price based on market demand, with the only condition that prices never fall below zero.

Solar Energy UK has a useful rating table that reveals which suppliers are currently offering the best prices. Alternatively, Ofgem publishes a list of SEG licensees each year and you can contact an energy company directly for more information about their tariffs.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a London home could save around £295 a year on energy bills by installing solar panels if someone was in the house all day, and could save an additional £90 a year by selling excess energy for less than Intelligent Export Guarantee.

Can I Get My Solar Panel System For Free

Its going to be difficult.

When the Feed-In Tariff was around 15p per kWh, it made a lot of sense for companies to install and maintain solar panel systems for free. Over the course of 25 years, the solar panel installer would make around £12,000 on the Feed-In Tariff leaving the homeowner to benefit from lower energy bills.

With the tariff at 3.93p today, the £12,000 that the installer would have earned six years ago would just yield him or her £3,144 now. Thats barely enough to pay for the solar panels let alone the installers.

Even when the tariff was a lot higher, it was never straightforward and certain that one of these companies would have installed a system on your home anyway. Why is that?

  • You need a south-facing roof with the right orientation to catch enough sun and daylight
  • Your home needed a Grade D or better energy performance certificate
  • The further north you are, the less electricity youre going to generate

The right set of circumstances had to exist for a company to make money from providing your home with a free solar panel system.

Free Solar Panels Through Creative Thinking

One common comment about the PPA is that you dont actually own the solar panels, so to some peoples thinking you didnt really get them for free. Other people just dont like the idea of someone having solar panels on the roof of their home and let someone else make money off of it. So saying that these panels are free does take a certain type of thinking. But lets face it if you get power from the regular power company they have some hardware attached to your home and they make money off it. Why not switch this out with a new type of power company that is going to have a new type of hardware attached to your home and give you a better rate on your electric bill. And the more and more people start signing up for this the more its going to be evident that solar power is a viable solution.

Repairing Damaged Free Solar Power Panels

How To Get Free Solar Panels

Sometimes the free solar power panels you end up with need some repair. Since solar panels don’t have many complicated moving parts, this is sometimes very easy to do.

Cracked solar panels can often be repaired by doing something as simple as applying some clear silicone to seal the cracks.

What Kinds Of Incentives Are Available In My State

The good news is that every state in the US offers some kind of incentive scheme that helps you save money on your solar system. The bad news is that it is complicated, and incentives differ from state to state.

Fortunately, there is an excellent resource that lets you find out what deals are on offer where you live quickly and easily. The DSIREUSA website is operated by N.C. Clean Energy Technology Centre at North Carolina State University.

This website has a very user-friendly setup to help you figure out what incentives are available to you. You can click on a map of your state to find out all of the incentives offered there. Even better, you can enter your ZIP Code and see whats available in your neighborhood.

You can be confident that the DSIREUSA offers good information since they receive funding from the US Department of energy. The website gives a brief summary of each of the incentive programs and then directs you to somewhere where you can find out about it in more detail.

Sale Of Electricity Through Net Metering

If you plan to connect your solar system to the local utility grid, you can sell them electricity that you dont use through the net metering system. One form of solar energy production incentive is for utilities to buy your surplus solar-generated electricity at high rates.

Net metering is an effective system that allows the most efficient use of electricity in a given area. When you connect to the network, there will be times when youre not using much power that you can watch your meter running backward. Just imagine how satisfying that is!

Admittedly, this kind of subsidy doesnt lower the purchase cost of your solar system, but it reduces your electrical costs still further and speeds up the time it takes to pay off the purchase of your solar system.
