Because payment is based on the number of kWh sent back to the grid, the amount you earn will depend on how much surplus energy your system creates. According to data from the Energy Savings Trust an average-size home with a 4kWp solar PV system installed should earn its owner around £94 per year, assuming rates of 5.5p/kWh.
But dont forget, the energy you use also contributes to lowering your energy bills. A typical solar PV system saves around £220 from your energy bill each year. When these two figures are combined an average household should be around £300 a year better off with solar. With a typical system costing £6000 to install, that equates to total payback within around 20 years.

What Happened To The Feed
The Feed-in Tariff was introduced by the government in 2010 to help increase the use of renewable energy. The scheme was in effect two tariffs, the Generation Tariff which paid a fixed amount for any electricity generated from a renewable source. And the Export Tariff which compensated homeowners for any unused electricity sent back to the grid.
The Feed-in tariff proved to be a huge success. Before 2010, the UK generated just 9.3 gigawatts from solar power. By 2017 that had risen to a massive 38.9 gigawatts, a gain of 319% in just seven years.

The one thing that solar leases and PPAs do is offer consumers a way to get solar without any upfront cost. However, there are other options available, such as financing your system with zero down.
A solar lease will allow the installer to build a system on your property and charge you a monthly fee to lease the equipment from them. This agreement will have you paying a flat monthly fee and will allow you to use 100% of the energy produced by the system.
Power purchasing agreements are somewhat similar, but rather than renting the equipment for a set fee each month, you will be required to buy power from the installer rather than the utility company. You will typically be charged a flat rate per kWh. Therefore, if you happen to use less power then what the system produces, you will be required to pay for the excess electricity is produced, but not to worry this will all be trued up annually between you and the utility company if you live in a Net Metering region.

Now Might Be The Best Time To Get Solar Panels
Why? Because the government is short of money and they desperately want to reduce the amount they pay to homeowners who are installing new solar panels.
Back in the 2015 Budget, the Chancellor George Osborne announced his intention to dramatically reduce the Feed-In Tariff by 87%. Following a backlash from the green lobby and from the solar panel industry, he backed down.
That was good news but, unfortunately, he still cut the rate by 64%. To give you an indication of the size of the drop in the tariff, it was at 12.03p per kWh prior to February 2016 after which it fell to 4.07p per kWh.
The 4.07p figure is important because it still allowed homeowners signing up to install a new solar panel system to be able to make their money back and a little bit more over time in the vast majority of cases.
Can I Make Money From The Energy My Solar Panels Generate
If you have a solar PV system and it generates more energy than you need, the surplus will go back to the national power grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee , launched in January 2020, electricity suppliers are offering payment for every unit of energy you export to the grid. The previous feed-in tariff scheme was much more generous, but closed to new customers at the end of March 2019.
If you sell electricity back to the national grid, you can select the best available SEG tariff, separate from any contract you have with a power supplier that powers your home.
SEG definitions can be fixed or variable. The SEG flat tariff will pay a specific price per kilowatt-hour of electricity exported for the duration of the contract. SEGs variable tariff will change the price based on market demand, with the only condition that prices never fall below zero.
Solar Energy UK has a useful rating table that reveals which suppliers are currently offering the best prices. Alternatively, Ofgem publishes a list of SEG licensees each year and you can contact an energy company directly for more information about their tariffs.
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a London home could save around £295 a year on energy bills by installing solar panels if someone was in the house all day, and could save an additional £90 a year by selling excess energy for less than Intelligent Export Guarantee.

Can I Get My Solar Panel System For Free
Its going to be difficult.
When the Feed-In Tariff was around 15p per kWh, it made a lot of sense for companies to install and maintain solar panel systems for free. Over the course of 25 years, the solar panel installer would make around £12,000 on the Feed-In Tariff leaving the homeowner to benefit from lower energy bills.
With the tariff at 3.93p today, the £12,000 that the installer would have earned six years ago would just yield him or her £3,144 now. Thats barely enough to pay for the solar panels let alone the installers.
Even when the tariff was a lot higher, it was never straightforward and certain that one of these companies would have installed a system on your home anyway. Why is that?
